Default new 997 crankcase

How much change does the new two piece crankcase represent ?? Is it similar to the dry sump block or just different from the 996-997 block, or somewhere in between ??

Also, does the elimination of the intermediate shaft affect RMS issues-failures ??
TIA

Someone else will have to chime on the crankcase question. I have not seen enough about it yet to know one way or the other altho I do not think it is a 'real' dry sump.

The intermediate shaft has nothing to do with RMS as the former is concerned with the engine's timing (timing chain/camshaft/valves) and the latter is concerned with the mating of the engine block to the transmission.

It's still an integrated dry sump. Similarity to that archaic design from the 964 is remote. They have reduced the weight, removed a significant number of moving parts, and are getting better mileage (fuel and oil) from it.

Today's article in Drivers Republic .com indicates that the proposed two piece crankcase is stronger than the four piece unit it replaces.

Does this represent progress or another example of giving us less but charging us more ?? The 10% more power part combined with 10% better fuel economy does sound like progress, however.

Considering the performance, a pretty good deal of progress IMHO
