My first Porsche was a 2002 Boxster S. It was a great car. The mid-engine provides amazing balance, and the car handles better than pretty much anything else I've driven.

If you can fit in a Z3, you can without question fit in a boxster or boxster S.

You'll see a huge difference between the Z3 and the Boxster. The Boxster has nay-sayers, but take it from an owner...it's a well tuned and defined car. Believe it or not, the Boxster can be more fun to drive than the 997.

So long as you can deal with all of the insecure haters on here you will find that it is an excellent car despite what some 911 owners may say.

The Boxster, though, was tight and tied down - felt wholly integrated as a system.

Make the move ... you will only be mad at yourself for not starting with a Boxster instead of the BMW.

As good as BMW is with coupes and sedans, they have always been lacking when it comes to roadsters IMO.

I bought my first 911 in 1970 and use to spend lots of times tracking my 911s over the years. So I have had the pleasure of meeting lots of serious Porsche enthusiasts over the years, and none of these guys has ever had anything negative to say about the Boxster. Moreover I have met a guy who writes for Excellence, and he drives a Boxster.

Bottom line is that I would recommend test driving a Boxster S. I believe that you will be pleasantly surprised. On the other hand if perception is important to you, there's nothing wrong with a 911 vert. I'm certain that there are excellent 996 verts that you buy at a very reasonable price.

Good luck.

Yes, get the Boxster S - you will see why it's a cult car among all but the "chickster hater" crowd. It is a fully sorted true sports car that I will miss when I sell it! Huge difference versus the Z3 (had an M), and only a smidgen less fun (about 75hp would fix this) to drive than a Gt3!

I would certainly choose a 987S over a 986 cab - the Boxster S will give a base 997 a run around most tracks.

Give one a drive, just remember to put your checkbook in a safe place or you'll wind up doing what I did...buying it on the spot.

There's a reason my avatar is my Boxster and not my Carrera...
