The 'ring is too bumpy for a 996Gt3 to shine. The 997 GT3 was faster with the suspension set to normal mode as opposed to soft. No such option on the 996GT3 which narrows the gap with the softer 997s.

The 996 GT3 has more power, much higher red line, less weight, a more track oriented suspension, a limited slip diff and bigger brakes. All things equal a GT3 will smoke a 997S on a race track.

I just find it interesting that there was only 5 seconds difference between the 996 GT3 and the 997S set to "sport" on The Ring. That and my own experiences at LRP and WGI suggest that they are comparable.

How do the 2 compare in terms of straight line speed.

Ron CT - Post your comment on the 6GT3 board. There is venom over there! I have the same experience as you as I tracked a 6GT3 with R comps and love my 997S with just streets. I think the GT3 is faster but the 997S is close and quite impressive on Sport for a street car. That's what I love about Porsche's you can take them all to the track and not worry.

I'd like to learn more about the rear bushing issue. If there is some documentation - if anyone could point me to it (I don't subscribe to Excellence) I would be grateful.

Thanks in advance!

I would talk to a few techs at the dealership, or contact Pete Stout at Excellence and he should point you in the right direction. Remember though that Porsche never fessed up to this.

The other place you could try is emailing the 997 tech expert in Panorama. They always get back to me on stuff and are pretty good. Its my favorite place for this kind of stuff.

I have not driven a GT3 on the track but I have driven a 996 (&997) GT3 on the street and I have tracked my 997S Cab.

The power weight ratio improvement on the GT3 cars is immediately apparent the car feels sportier and more aggressive; the ride is harder, lower and noisier. The high redline and the willingness to rev is really animal like!

The 997S is a real performer and is pretty civilized on the street, my non Porsche friends are quite surprised at “how nice” the 997 is. They also notice just how powerful and how well it handles and pushing the sport button brings another surprise!

If I wanted a more “pure” track car then the GT3 would be my choice, the 997S is a better all round car (for me) so that was my choice. I just could not deal with the low harsh ride of the GT3 on the street.

I do not think the GT3 board has any venom. I think that posters are more "terse" because this topic has been discussed ad nauseum over the years (since '05 - so do a search). And to those that track PCars, I believe that it is quite evident that the 996 GT3 is cleary a faster track car in the hands of a driver capable of driving close to 9 or 10/10ths.

Now regarding the 997S - that car is so damn good looking that I still dream about it! As a combi-street/DE car - I would own one without question. However, I can have a dedicated track car and chose the 996 GT3. Truthfully, one can't go wrong with either car. It really depends on personal preference and what you want from the car.

Agreed. The 997S is very close to performance to 6GT3.
Mine with cup car control arms and proper neg camber (-3.5) runs similar times to B Class GT3s at The Glen and LimeRock on RA1s.

The 6GT3 is still faster and its only worth the choice over the 997S if it is mostly used as a track car. For street duties the 997S is miles ahead in comfort and the interior is in another league.
