Thinking of simplifying my life by getting rid of my 05 E55 and 06 4S Cab and getting the new AMG SL when it comes out. My kids are away at school and I end up not getting enough use out of either of them. Thoughts?

I hate having multiple cars. That new SL63 looks like a beast... Go for it. From what I understand, it is a big step forward even though the SL body is getting old now. Simplify your life and drive a sexy, versatile car in the process.

Why not just dump the E55 and drive the C4S full time. Then you're not sucking rank wind for depreciation on an additional car.

What does the C4S lack that you'll get in the SL63?

Why not the black series? combine your Porsche performance with the Merc sedan (well its a coupe)

SL63 is bada__, but if you're only going to have one car, why not make it a Porsche? Go for the Turbo cab!

I don't think the SL63 is as versatile as the C4S. It doesn't have the jump seat space, and it has little room in the trunk with that hard stop stowage space. And it is a heavy car. I'm sure it is a blast to drive, with gobs of torque (I love my C55 for that reason), but the Porsche is a blast too. And I'll bet the SL63 uses a lot more gas for the same thrill, and won't be quite as much fun on twisties as the Porsche (I said quite, because I expect it will still be a lot of fun).
But we all have our own needs and priorities. So if the SL63 is what you want, go for it and don't worry about any of our opinions. It is for you, not us.

I have test driven the SL many times and have found it beautiful but boring, needs a 3rd foot pedal, also consumers reports rates the reliabilty as quite poor

If you haven't driven the new SL 63, you haven't driven the SL. The new transmission is amazing and the power is great. This is a great car, handles well fits a niche. It will not disappoint.

As to whether to buy it over a Porsche or not, it depends upon tastes, preferences and uses.

I've had three SL's over the years. I've also had three E55's, and that's a smoking car. I loved my E55 and still miss it to this day. IF you're just itching for a new car, fine. But to me, I think you're already "there", my friend.

Cheers~

It seems as though you're looking for something that is not a sedan and you're not worried about losing that Porsche feel. You seem to be looking for a hp and tq monster in a compact luxury GT unit. If you like the Benz and the attributes the SL AMG has, then yes this is a logical choice for you coming from the AMG stable already. If you want even more thrust you could opt for the 65 or go hard w/the Black as OG noted. The 65 Black will probably go for 250 though.

I think you're already very close in your decision process - just looking for a little validation from your P friends.

The 63 will be a very sweet ride indeed - the 65 killer.

Cheers and good luck

I would rather have 2 cars to play with than just one car. Besides, the depreciation of SL is scary...

Don't you think the depreciation of a Porsche is just as scary, if not more so? There are slightly used 07 Porsches that are selling for $30k less than original list.

I agree with having 2 fun cars if you can swing it.

the c4s and the e55 are such different cars-they both satisfy different needs. the e55 is a torque monster-a supercharged almost 500 hp muscle car-the only negative that i could find with the e55 is it's somewhat numb steering, otherwise it is like a vette with room in it. the c4s is a c4s-an awd, all weather sportscar that handles like a porsche-it lacks the off the line step on the peddle explosiveness of the e55, but i don't have to tell you that it handles with surgical knife accuracy. i think if you sell both the c4s and the e55 and buy a sl63, you will miss the feel and fun of the porsche. let me make a suggestion. the sl63 is now available and sells/leases for top dollar-there is a strong demand for this car. on the other hand, the e63 is a huge improvement over the e55 (in terms of much better handling alone-it is almost bmw-ish) it will take a vette 0-60 and will also take an m5. in addition, the demand for the car is low-most dealers will give close to a $10,000 discount off of msrp or will lease the car to you for about $1250 for 27 months-a pretty cheap lease for a msrp $95000 car. i leased one about 4 months ago and the car is a blast-my advice-trade the e55 for the e63-you will enjoy the e63 as by handling alone, it is a great improvement over the e55. it will also be about half the price of the nondiscounted sl63-for the price of the sl63, you can keep the c4s and get the new and improved and discounted e63.

I'd be more tempted with the C63. It will likely handle more crisply than the E63. Personally, either one would be my choice over a SL.

big difference between the luxory and 0-60 speed of an e63 than a c63-the e63 has more amg tweaks also, but is also more money.
