Default Porsche wants us all to buy new 997s.

Eric,

The new tail-light's lower edge is no longer straight; it's curved, but in all the spy shots, the “new curve” is covered by paint (tape?) the same color as the car.
You can see the tail-light's lower edge clearly under the camo.
Seems like a shape change for no apparent reason, unless of course it's to keep original 997s from retrofitting those new LED tail-lights.
It's devious, I tell you…simply devious.

I don't want to get caught up in bashing the 09 because I have a pre-refresh 997. The good news as far as I'm concerned is that it doesn't look that different. Thats great. I love the current look so much that I was hoping it wouldn't change too drastically anyway as I considered holding out for the 09.

Looks aside, the 09 big news to me, and my hope was, that there would be a 25-30 hp gain. If that happens I'm still OK with my decision to get an 08. Maybe that will sell more mods, tuners must be salivating.

We are all fortunate to have these fine cars. I can't wait to see the first posts of the 09. Good luck to those waiting in the wings!

Here's my take on the rounded lights (rear). Drainage. The current cars collect water along the bottom edge of the light housing and having a curve along the bottom will provide a superior drainage route for water.

It's about time they got the mirrors right. I've always hated the puny side mirrors that the 997 got, after having done it right on the 996.

I hope they fixed the puny sun visor problem too.

The taillight change looks purely cosmetic to me. Change for the sake of change. I doubt there was anything functional about it, including any drainage consideration. The interface has always been a flat surface - no cupping in the design to trap water.

Probably to make it harder to retro-fit LED tails to pre-FL cars. I'm sure many owners of the early 997 would uprade the tails -- leading to fewer new car sales.

Not sure if you guys have seen the LED tails working on other cars (E46 M3, AM Vantage, Audi A8, etc). They are really cool how much quicker they go on and off -- and they are bright. Plus all the non-visible benefits (longer life, less energy, etc.).

I am at the factory on May 27th, I am sure I will see a bunch of new ones running around. Will they be in full production by then?

I think Chris is referring to the new PCM console layout (taken from my collection of 80+ facelift photos ):
