Default 997 MkII Spy pics and Article

Some pretty good spy pics and an article on the 997 facelift were published today. Thought you guys might want to check it out. If the estimated bhp and torque increases of 10-15% are accurate, the new cars will be considerably stronger. I was expecting less than 10%.

The good thing for 09 is that the Euro sport suspension with limited slip will be available for the U.S. and sunroof delete is back !

Visually.....agreed. But 10% or 15% more hp? That's a bigger bump than X51 even on the low end of the scale. Can't wait to see what they'll charge for that considering $17K for X51.

No big changes on the Mk II to me. The bigger news to me may be is that the next 2011 911 will be coded named as 991.

That the first interior shot I've seen and I have to say that I like the new, albeit minor, tweaks to the PCM console, both in terms of button layout and console color.

I find the second photo, the rear end photo, interesting because of the apparent small panel that runs along the bottom edge of the engine lid. If you look at other rear photos, you don't see this presumed panel. I wonder if it will be something other than body colors (i.e. lighted, reflective, etc.). I'm not sure if it is anything actually, but it seems to suggest body disguising, like they are clearly doing on the rear lights, front marker lights, etc.

If I don't find a used 997 that matches my search criteria in the next few months, I might be back in to the ordering line this summer......

Here's a quote from the end of the article . . .

"We hear the next step-change in the 911 saga comes in 2011. Details are shaky at this stage, but it will be codenamed 991 and keep the world's best-known sports car ticking over until 2018. And, yes, it will still be rear-engined."

How do they come up with the model numbers? 911 to 993 to 996 to 997 to 991? I wonder why they jumped to 993 leaving only six more sequential numbers under 1000. So logically they skip to 996??

Reinforces my decision to purchase an 08. I've had 3 dealers tell me that the hp will be in the 10-15 hp range not 10-15%. Probably speculation on everyones part at this stage and dealers wanting me to by an 08 too. All in all very subtle changes and thats good. I don't want the 911 to change too much. Beautiful car.

Originally Porsche used numerical codes representing the internal project number, much like BMW with their E and now F codes. That went out the window at some point. I suspect that the 964 was chosen to honor the intro year of the first 911s (1964).

993: Pretty sure I read someplace (Excellence Was Expected?) that 993 was selected for the introduction year (1993).

996: don't know, but Porsche did think that the 993 would have a very short lifetime, and maybe planned for the 996 to be out by 1996 (actual: 1998).

997: minor update to the 996 (996+1)

991: 2011 intro?
