Default WWYD? (looking to replace totalled 996 with a 997 - rv)

I just settled with my insurer on a totaled 996, and am looking to replace it with a 997.

I'm looking at a couple of 2006 997 S's, both at roughly the same price and basically equipped the same. One has the exterior/interior color combo I like with only 7,000 miles, but is being sold by a BMW dealer with only the remaining factory warranty on the car that expires in late 2009. The other has 19,000 miles and a color combo that's not my first choice, but that's Porsche certified, with a warranty that runs until 2011.

So, what would you do? Go for the more pleasing color, or go for the warranty? Inquiring minds want to know.

Many thanks,

Dmitri

Go with the color. The warranty you need can be purchased. If not you'll feel that you compromised everytime you look at the car.

Boy, was THAT convenient to total a 996!! We're not going to ask...

Reliability on the 997s is proving to be quite good so the shorter warranty should not be an issue for you. 7000 miles is not even broken in.

Thanks, all. I didn't plan to be in the market for a car, but now that I am, I thought that I'd spend more than what I got for my '03, and move up to an '06 or '07. I never had anything major go wrong with my 996 while it was out of warranty during the past 1-1/2 years, but the few annoying things that did go wrong were relatively expensive (trunk latch needed to be replaced; regulator motor on passenger side window going bad). I managed to sell my wife on the idea that for about $20k out of pocket, I could get an '06 or '07 that was Porsche Certified, so that I'd essentially have a much newer car with the equivalent of a new car warranty.

I'm the one that will be driving it every day, and don't want to "settle" for something that's not my first choice; but, at the same time, I don't want to hear a bunch of "I told you so's" if/when something breaks out of warranty about 1-1/2 years from now.

Is there a decent third party warranty out there that would bridge this gap?

Thanks, again, for your help!

Why not search dealer inventories in your region? It's cheap to fly regionally. You can get the car you want AND a warranty.

The porsche Website has all the dealers and inventories listed.

Post-script: I passed on the car from the BMW dealer and bought a CPO'd 997 C2S at McKenna Porsche in Norwalk. Arctic Silver over black, w/clear side-markers. Sharp-looking car. Options include power, heated seats; NAVI; Bose Hi-End sound; CD changer; sports chrono (I wasn't looking for this option, but also didn't pay a premium for it). It's good to be back in the saddle again with the purr of Porsche engine behind me.
