There is no one number. It varies from model to model and year to year. The Porsche Recommended interval is the one that comes with your car's owners/service manual. (accounting for the fact that if the car is old and oils have improved substantially, some adjustment may be necessary, but since the mechanicals of the engine have not changed, not too much adjustment)

You and I are on the same page. It's probably a little too often, but I'd rather err on the same of too often rather than not often enough.

I have a 2006 997.1. I change the oil every 3500-4000 miles. Spin on filter and magnetic plug as insurance. I think the recommended interval, at least for my type of car is too long.

The first reply to this thread was the best one.

Historically I've gone well beyond the mfgs recommendation for oil changes. Often 20-25k miles. I plan to treat the 997 a little more carefully but at the same time i doubt there's much real life data to support changing oil at 3k miles on modern cars.

I change mine at 5K per my Indy recommendation which is a bit more than once a year. Some of the earlier posters were correct in that there are contaminants that get into the oil, some that are physical and some that are chemical. The filter takes care of the physical but not the chemical. Based on how expensive failures can be in these cars, I take the "cheap insurance" route. Why risk the engine life for the occasional c-note?

I change my oil twice a year, or 5000 miles, which ever comes first. My reasoning is: 1)This is the only wrenching I get to do since the car is so darn good anyway, 2)anyone buying a 997 who knows anything about these cars expects it, 3)cheep insurance, 4)love the car.

I follow the recommendations of those that have studied and developed products for these engines: LN and Flat6 innovation. They recommend 3k change. Oil is cheap, these engines are not.

LOL. I love oil threads. Sorry to break it to everyone on the forum, but when and how often you change your oil is completely subjective to how you drive your car. Want to know the answer? Get an oil analysis each oil change with a company like Blackstone. They will let you know if your oil is protecting your engine or not and if there is any additive left etc. Let science and not gut feel guide you. Again I love reading these types of threads.

Can't believe I'm adding to an oil thread, but...

Mobil 1 is cheap, filters now free through FCP euro lifetime warranty, and living in Ohio I am pro global warming. I checked blackstone prices and at $29 per test it seemed simpler to just change more frequently. And I get to spend an hour under the car every few months.

Change mine every spring in all my cars.

However, no real experience in storing cars for winter, so I was wondering if I should change before storage in automn or after storage in the spring. Current Oil is mobil1 and was changed at the end of March. All in all, by the time I store it, there will be approx. 2000 miles on this oil.

So change before storage, or after ???

Always change it before storage. Oil becomes acidic inside an engine as it is used up. You do not want that in the system for extended periods of time. That way when you uncover it in the Spring all you need to do is start it up and go. Will it cause damage if you don’t, nope, but the Porsche crowd is pretty risk adverse.
