Default Two Year Service

Got the 30 day service warning light that comes on every now and then. I changed the oil about 1500 miles ago (third time). Car has 10K miles.

The manuel indicates it is mostly a check and inspect type of service. I am probably going to go through with it, but am not completely convinced it is necessary. Maybe they update the computer or something. What do you think?

Here's what I did.

(1) oil change and filter
(2) air filter change
(3) cabin filter change
(4) battery fluid--top off
(5) inspected the serpentine belt
(6) inspected the coolant level
(7) inspected tires for wear (crucial to do this on a lift to see the INSIDE wear pattern on the rear tires).
(8) brake pad check

Things like brake fluid can go further. (I have PCCBs so no wear of anything at 20,000 miles)

I then had my shop zero out the visual service advisory.

I'll let you know how it goes....tomorrow mine goes in for the overdue 2 year check up. I agree with Dan that most of it is easy DIY but I just don't have the time these days. Plus, hopefully I'll get a fun loaner!

I am going in for 2 years (2 1/2) service tomorrow also. Dealer has the free Alignment promotion going.

If you do your own service, how would you document that it was done? I always wondered about that.

I could have done my own 20k mile service but elected to have the dealer do it. Reasons:

1. My dealer charges $441 for the service(parts, oil and labor). This seemed very reasonable.

2. I had them flush the brake system for $243

3. The dealer does a complete check of the car and provides a check list signed by the technician. They
also read out the fault memory in the computer for any potential issues.

4. When I had my car in, the dealer reprogrammed by DME as per a service bulliten.

5. It was a good time to have the dealer check on any noises or rattles.

6. I figured that if I have a warranty claim, I will be in better shape with the dealer performed service.

I keep a log book on each of my vehicles. It documents the date, mileage and what was done.

It is satisfactory for any claims. For example, many years ago I had a claim against a manufacturer. It went into arbitration. The arbitrators had my log book to go by,--and they accepted it. (And I won).

Wink Keep receipts, buy the oem parts from the dealer so that there is additional proof...

of purchase. Take your digital camera and take pictures of what you are doing.
I like to see Porsche void your warranty with that kind of proof. Fun to do..you learn something and you can spend the savings on a few expensive dinners with your honey.

The big advantage of using dealer service while under warranty is that it makes it much easier to get any questionable items covered. Also after the warranty expires they are much more likely to be helpful if they know the car was properly maintained by a dealer.

The big disadvantage is that you pay dearly for that. And if the car never has a problem, all you can say is that you paid a lot to essentially just have your oil changed.

My car is right now in for 2 year service - what I didn't know is that there is an Air-Conditioner recall that also was in affect.

First trip to Pioneer Porsche - Great Folks even if I do have a Hyundai as my loaner car.

Is that a "free" alignment they do with the $800 oil change?

I just spoke to my GM "friend" at the dealer. I only have 5000 on my almost 2 year old p-car. I asked for his honest assessment whether I needed the $800 service or not. I have a 3 year lease and will be trading it in. He told me on a lease that I have no choice. They will charge me more in the end when I turn it in if the service has not been performed. He suggested that I just bite the bullet. Not the answer I wanted to hear.

Can't you have it serviced at a Porsche authorized shop? You could likely save $500 or $600 doing that, like I could have if I had known of it.

Actually, the dealer told me the free alignment is good with the purchase of "major service (40K)" which cost "only" $700. You will get the regular 20K stuff plus the new spark plugs and other stuff I don't remember... So I ended up paying $580 for the 20K (2 years) and brake service, no alignment (would have cost me another $199).
