Default X51 Appeal

From reading this forum over the last 6 months or so, I have been impressed by the enthusiasm expressed by owners of cars with the X51 power package, despite its high cost of over $500/hp. I have considered looking into purchasing a used one, but find there are VERY few on the market around the country, especially in cabs. Given the rarity of them, is it likely that they will hold their value better than average? Or is there not any more demand for used ones than there apparently is for new ones, meaning that the X51 option may be like other options that have little value to subsequent buyers. Just curious about what others think.

I think they will hold their value much worse than average. Very few used car buyers will be willing to pay a significant premium for that option. It may cost 16K for the option when new but on a used car it may only be worth 1/3 or 1/4 of that.

Agreed on that option not holding its value. Steve's C4S is a good example and seems like a screaming deal. The one that kills me is the $3500 option for tiptronic which actually seems to lower the resale price.

+1 It was worth about 5k on used 07/997s a few months ago. Pity.

Options simply don't hold their value. If you want to stave off depreciation, buy a car as close to stripped as possible.

When is the last time you saw a Yugo.....very rare indeed. Just because it is rare it does not imply it will hold its vallue. IMO, some options are nice for ease of resale...but rarely do options hold their vallue.

Even the great "Club Coupe" option won't raise the price of a car on after sale (not much at least)....

Get what ya like - don't worry about after sales....

John,

You are kidding, right? I expect my club coupe to appreciate in value 20 years down the road at the auction...

+1

I bought this option knowing that I would never get a return on the trade in.

Every time a drive my car, I know I made the right decision.

People who don't have the X-51 feel it costs too much. People who have it seemed to be satisfied. Web forums are good for information, but YOU will drive the car each day.

I have the poor man's version. Awe Headers and cats, X-51 air box, Rss Plenum and TB, and APR ECU tune. If I had it to do over again when buying I would have waited for the x-51. The added TQ and HP are very nice.

dndodd-

How close to the X51 set-up does that feel like it really is? I ask because I would like to do the same.

I have never driven an X-51 car so I don't know. But it is noticeable and a significant improvement. I have no regrets.

I wouldn't be surprised if I have more power than an X-51, but if you put Cats and an ECU on an X-51 I think it would have more power.

The powerband comes on sooner and much lower in the revs about 3,000 and it is very linear.

Yugos aren't just rare, they're almost extinct.

Options never hold their value that well. If you want to keep the car for a while, get your favorite color and options. If you trade every 2 years, get a stripped silver, grey, or black one.

Anything that makes the car more suitable for track use will pay off over time, but only when the car gets down into the range of the weekend track warrior. My 1988 was more sought after when I sold it 3 years ago because it was a hardtop coupe, and they seemed to sell mostly targas in the '80's.
