Default tested 997 base model

I have been driving a 997S for the last 2 years and I loved it. But today I drove the base model and it was a very interesting comparison. The first thing I would like to say is that if you get the base model you are getting an awesome car (which somehow makes sense to me since I had a 996 before and that was a terrific car). This particular car was a 6 speed with 18 wheels, and I am convinced that the 997 rides better in 18´s versus 19s (they feel very heavy). The car feels more refined yet still sporty if you push it. Brakes were excellent, the gear change too, and the engine is not as powerful as the 3.8, but fast enough to entertain...in summary, a great car and terrific value if you ask me.

Oh how I wish we could get 18's and no PASM on the S!

That's why I didn't get an S and I installed H&R coil-overs and it feels like an 04 GT3.
I think the 18" from a base C4 should fit an S,they're both wide body.Call Ernie's wheel if you want to find out,I know he has used sets.(305)687-0028

997S is not a wide body car. Only the C4,C4S,GT3RS,Turbo and GT2 (all measurements in inches) appear to be the lovely widebodied ladies....

Base 997 Width 71.18 without mirrors
997S Width 71.18 without mirrors
997 C4 72.91 without mirrors
997 C4S 72.91 without mirrors
997 Turbo 72.91 without mirrors
997 GT2 72.91 without mirrors
997 GT3 71 (narrow eh?)
997 GT3RS 72.9 without mirrors

I would check with dealer in fitment of each model to make sure they fit without rub.

The recent Excellence magazine has a great article on the base 997.

As I've said here before I've owned both a C2 and a C2S. The C2 is the better car unless every 10th matters to you. It rides better, handles smoother and th power delivery is more linear.

No way drove the base carerra as the initial test drive and it felt slow and sluggish..great car, just no oomph. Got into the S immediately afterwards at the dealership and felt like night and day...bought the S that afternoon and have never looked back. I guess to each his own.

Compared to what exactly. To use these adjectives for a 911 is ridiculous and simply sounds foolish. You needed the S for whatever reason. You convinced yourself. Dont use fuzzy logic to back into/support your own conclusions. For most, from experience, skill, usability, and function standpoint, and without the testoterone or 'my d**k is bigger than yours' thinking facactored in , the base is perfectly suitable. Whatever.

It's so funny hearing these comparisons. Both cars are excellent. Anyone who is lucky enough to own a Porsche should be proud. Having said that, what you get with the S is more power. If that is important, then get it. If not, save some money and get a base model. Most of the time on the street it won't make much difference anyway. For the track, the S will out perform because of the power.

No worries Cello...I preferred the S, and you didn't no fuzzy logic I guess that's why they make different models. Anyway, sounds like we're both happy drivers, and at the end of the day, they're both porsches thru and through, which is still better than 99% of the chaps on the road can drive

if you could get the brakes from the S as an option on the base - that would be great. Alot of people don't need the bigger engine, and don't want PASM or the 19" wheels, or the xenon lights. But you can never have enough brakes.
