the 0-60 times differ by .2 seconds, so night and day? The difference I noticed was that because the S does not deliver its power as smoothly/linearly that at certain RPM levels it gave a bit of neck jerk the non S did not and that might explain what you call "oomph". I prefer the smoothness and willingness the 3.6 offers over the "oomph" of the S, but I could see your point from an adrenaline perspective.

 

Wow...I've never quite heard of the base 997 as being slow and sluggish.

You must have grown up driving Ferraris, Lambos and other faster exotics...but then the S would have felt a bit slow and sluggish as well...hmm...or maybe you are an experienced race car driver and can feel every tenth by the seat of your pants. That must be it.

 

I thought hard about the base car before I bought the "S". Prime reason for going with the "S" was the brakes and PASM sport mode. I had an '02 996 and had to change out the base suspension to the MO30because it was too soft as I track quite a bit. I didn't want to go through that again especially as the MO30 was not available in the U.S. this time around for the 997. I was also not super impressed with the brakes at the track on the 02 996 and it was my understanding they were exactly the same on the 997 base. The "S" brakes are great. I do wish the "S" was set up with 18s though. Will probably purchase a set of lightweight ones for the track this spring.

It's not a popular combo...but you can get PCCBs on the base 997. Seriously thinking about it for my next 997. Along with the new sport buckets, it will be a great street/track car.

I've had a non-S for three years, and not once wished for more power. I have run out of brakes on the track, however...

I see huge praise for the PCCBs on this site, and was tempted to make the change on my car when I saw a used set for sale for $6000. When I checked with a local Porsche shop that is highly recommended by other Rennlisters I learned that they have had GT3 owners come in to have their PCCBs replaced with steel brakes. The PCCBs do stop well, and are light weight, but apparently these owners have had heat problems when tracking. And components are expensive: for example the cost of each rotor is now $5200 just for the part. (If I had them on my car, I'd be buying that full set for $6000 in a heartbeat.) A true cost benefit analysis might be worthwhile before opting for them.

 

Been done. The Supercup teams all had to use PCCB's and from what I remember about what was said in the interview is that the cost for them is a wash between steel and PCCB's. If cost is no object and you want every last ounce of performance, get the PCCB's but most serious track junkies with 997's use steel. The main reason is cost. If you damage a rotor (think gravel trap) you are out alot of cash. Damage a steel rotor, who cares. And you will probably be able to find spares at the track.

 

Had PCCB in my ex-997S and steel brakes in current club coupe. PCCB gives a stronger initial bite that in turn gives you the "sense" of stronger brakes power. Been on the track with both 997S and can confirm that the steel brakes are more-than-adequate. It will last the whole track day and only at the last run it performs not as good as the am runs but still adequate. Advantage of PCCB on the track will be the reduced unsprung weights at the wheels which you really can feel and appreciate during turn-ins.

Haven't test drove a base 997 but I'm sure it is more power than most of us can use. Advantage of its ride will be the 18" wheels, which we can easily fit on our 997S.

 

I ordered the "s" model cause every Porsche I have ever owned had an "s" on the badge.
