Just had complete engine melt down in a 2005 997 C2. Documents read 'cracked intermediate shaft bearing.' Tech said it was an rear-main-seal failure that lead to it. Engine has been replaced but I fear the possibility of it happening again as well as now having a diminution in resale value.
A bad RMS cannot cause the kind of damage you describe. Likely, the dealer had no idea what the cause was. Obviously, if the leak was so bad that you lost all oil in the engine, then that is a different story, but then the cause would be yours for not paying atention to the oil gauge.
As far as the new engine, I wouldn't sweat it. Maybe do something different with this one, like fill it with a better oil than the Mobil 0W40?
There are at least a couple hundred 997 owners on this forum, and this is the first I've heard of a catastrophic failure, so I wouldn't be concerned about it happening again. Nor would I be concerned about any reduction in resale value...if anything, it has extended the life of the car and therefore increased resale. We're many decades away from anybody being concerned about numbers-matching all-originality affecting collectibility of these cars. And when it does happen, the factory has documentation of the new motor in the old car.
car had 15k miles on it. it has been properly serviced by porsche the entire life - and used factory recommended mobil 1 0w40. i was sitting at a traffic light when it occurred. heard a metallic grinding noise and then the engine shut down. when it was winched onto the flatbed about 5 quarts of oil came pouring out from the engine protection pan.
My boss has an 05 C2 and it was the intermediate crank shaft as well. I guess it was a bad bearing that eventually led to the failure. They replaced his engine with a rebuilt and it's suppose to have all of the updates of the 06/07 motors. I would consider the failure a good thing as you will now have the latest updates on the rebuilt motor.
Don't sweat it, don't worry about resale (not an issue - I'd call it a positive as you have a new engine vs. one with 15k on it), don't worry about the new engine going "ka-boom". Just drive and enjoy it.
There are several cases of the intermediate crank shaft failing, but apparantely 06 and up got a stronger crankshaft, so the problem shouldn't come up again. All of the cases have happened under 30,000 miles.
I wish that when my engine is close to warranty expiration that the engine and the tranny would have a castraphic failure. What more do you want....you get a new lease on life for your car. Its like having a new car without paying for it.
Happened to me at 7500 and couldn't be happier. New engine and ancillaries courtesy of Porsche. New one is great and have every confidence it will be so for years to come.
X51 should require a new engine management system etc and even if he agreed to pay the difference, I'd bet and unfortunatley so, Porsche won't go for it.
With all these cases popping up, one can hope that it will happen during the warranty period. Since, they have been happening so early on in the engine's life, it seems that if it were to happen, that it will before the warranty goes up.
