i am on my first 911, i have a 2005 c2 and i have put a few thousand miles on it. I am coming out of an m3 and the ride is harsher, which i expected, but i notice when i go over bumps that car feels like the rear is getting rocked...it really sounds like the rear is pounding. Is this normal in a 997 and just part of the beast, or is something wrong???
Take it to your dealer and take the service manager for a ride and talk through your observations. Might be a suspension issue, tire pressures, etc. What you think feels harsh and what others feel is "normal" may be the same. But your dealer can tell you if it's within specification or not.
i added H&R springs which made the pounding a little more prominent, but it has always pounded even before the springs, i feel if i bring it to a dealer they will just pass it off on the springs and then charge me out the nose to tell me that
and you are wondering why your ride is harsh? The C2 suspension is a dream (I've driven the base 997). The oem shocks and springs were designed together to work as a system. Now you've changed the springs, but not the shocks, so you are bound to get a different ride. Granted, we have to assume H&R made the springs assuming you are using the oem shocks, but...
i knew the ride would be harsher as i did the same thing to my previous 2 m3's and knew what i was getting into. but this pounding problem seemed to always exist, it was actually the first thing i noticed when i test drove another 2005 c2, i figured it was the nature of the beast, but just wanted to make sure

What's the total mileage on your tires? Rears get pretty hard around 10k.
Also, tire pressures as noted above... 44 in the rears is pretty high for partial load. On the other hand, don't run them too low. Plenty of info here in the board; do a search...
You have the steel suspension, so we can't blame PASM...
Another thing to check... I've heard of many cases of premature failure of shocks when people add aftermarket springs. I hear it more with PASM cars, but also with base cars as well. Perhaps your rear shocks are on their way out or gone altogether...
I had three e46 M3s before my 2007 997S coupe. I find the ride better in my 997S than any of the M3s, unless I have the 997S in sport mode. I do have more rattles in the 997S than all three M3s combined however.
the 911 is a dream on the highway, so smooth, just when i hit bumps it feels like the rear is gettin rocked, almost like it is movin an inch to the side and jumping

Sounds like you have a problem. Maybe it is your after market springs.
