997. Get the newest model that your pocket can absorb.

Although the exterior isn't a huge difference, the interior is by far (IMO) nicer. Maybe find a well taken car of 05 or 06 w/ few miles to add an additional savings?

I have owned both and loved both. I think it is hard to tell someone else that one is better than the other. From my personal experience and taste I much prefer my 997S. I think the interior along is miles better, but I know people who like the 996 interior better. I like the 997 traditional oval headlight and more flared fenders, but I can understand those who like the more contemporary 911 interpretation of the 996. Ultimately for me in this case I would go with the new car. I always want the newest possible that I can afford. I love the 40th, but I honestly do not think it is really that unique or special and neither did the market when it was introduced. I do love the GT silver color. So for me I would go with what i perceive to be the better interior, more traditional style, and newer car. It is not an easy decision.
