No muffler by it self is going to increase performance. PSE's and aftermarket mufflers are bought solely for the aural satisfaction.

The intrinsic value of a PSE is: a) it's an OEM part, b) it emits a pleasing sound, c) the chromed offset tips are very nice and finally d) it can be controlled simply by throwing a switch.

To each it's own to coin a phase.

+ It's a real double exhaust system which means better exhaust flow.

Even if it was a triple exhaust system I bet if you dyno it you'll find the gain to be nil. In fact you might even lose some low end torque.

I didn't get my PSE for the performance increase. 355 horses to me is just fine. I love the sound of the PSE and the fact that in situations I can tone it down to avoid unnecessary attention and neighbor 'stink eye'.

I hear you load and clear. I purchased the PSE for SOUND ONLY. The observation of the double exhaust system is just that, an observation. I rather have a double exhaust system compared next to a single exhaust system. The single exhaust system with the double exhaust tip seems cheesy.

Interesting that only one response in this thread mentions the possible effect on the engine a modification like this might have.
Changing the backpressure of your system (which is what changing the 'sound' of your exhaust does) will effect the engine's performance, maybe a little, maybe more, but you can't just pop on a new exhaust and expect everything else to be the same.
Ask the kids who throw a 'motor boat exhaust can' on their Hondas and three months later have toasted valves, or worse.

we are not exactly talking open headers here. Burnt exhaust valves are pretty hard to do by bypassing a muffler after the cats.

One can argue that spending $80K+ for a car is a waste of money.

Well said.

I turn my PSE on everytime I get in the car. But, the best part is I can turn it off whenever I want and I do that as well, specially on long drives!

Sorry to resurrect a 10 month old thread, but I was looking for some specific information which I couldn't find from searching.

Has anyone from CA performed this mod on their 997.1 stock exhaust? If so, any issues with emissions testing? This looks like an inexpensive way for me to get the sound I'm looking for, but I need to make sure I won't have any problems with smog checks because of this mod. TIA!

It is a loud exhaust, but it is not PSE.

No matter how we bapass it, it still doesn't have the meachanism on the PSE that can be switched On and Off from the driver seat, needless to say the extra value of 4yr/50K warranty if it came with the car.

With best regards,
+1, well said.

OP - I'm glad it works for you but some of us like that our PSE came from the factory. I think a lot of us wouldn't buy a used 997 with a "hacked" setup because we have no idea what it really did to the car's performance, whether it was a good job, etc. Also, the on/off ability is perfect for not only those quiet moments (4am departure from my house) but when I'm simply not in the mood to hear the exhaust over a quiet volume setting on the Bose.

Ironically many of the people who love the factory option also love to disconnect it and leave the bypass valve open to replicate the sound that the bypass provides. I believe the PSE also quiets the exhaust in a certain range to meet European Noise Regulations so you don't get the full "benefit" unless you disable the system.

I guess I just should've started a new thread instead of resurrecting this one. I think I'll do that. Sorry about that...

I like it when someone posts their 'hack' job on their 911, that way I know never to buy that car.

I got the PSE, first thing I did was unplug it, nice and loud all the time and sounds good.
