Just a posting to report on my tire wear on the 06 Carrera S Cabriolet. Turned 17,000 miles the other day and the OE tires by Bridgestone (305/30 ZR 19 N0) are being replaced. Just ordered a pair from the Tire Rack for $310 each. Was just starting to get into the cords on the inside (camber) on one of them. Compared to the reports I've read herein with Michelin and Pirelli it sounds like I got pretty good service. I didn't 'track' the car but I didn't exactly baby it either if you get my drift...

 

That is a great price knowing that for me to replace the Michelin PS2 305/30/19 for my rears will cost me $465 or so. I have 10,000 miles and 7 DE's and they are about gone. I need to find a set of DE wheels/tires and get new street tires. I have been very happy with the Michelin PS2 but I wonder for the street if the Bridgestones will be just fine?

 

I have not seen your tires in person but by looking at the pictures you posted, will your fronts last another 17,000 miles? Your Bridgestone’s started out with 10/32’s of an inch of thread, how much thread on the fronts do you have now?

My OEM Pirelli PZero rears were down to the wear bars at just a tad over 7,000 miles; the fronts were to the point that they would have not have lasted through another set of rears so I mounted 4 Michelin PS2’s. They appear to be doing better than the Pirellis and I may get 10,000 miles out of the Michelins.

 

Any of these tires will make it way past 10k miles on street driving...even agressive street driving.

 

The Bridgestone performance tires are as good as the Michelins and some find them even better.

 

Historically, I have usually replaced my fronts with every two sets of rears on my 911s. I don't see that changing with the 997. They still appear quite new up front. I wasn't really into the wear bars much on the rear,--it was the negative camber that finally caused the inside tread to wear to a coard.

 

Dan, did you get your alignment fix?

 

Edgy-17k is great! I got about 10k on the backs out of the PS2s. Had the 295s and changed to the 305s. The front look fine. I agree with you, and plan to change out all four the next time. I have heard a lot of good things about the Bridgestones and plan to give them a try. Let me know if you have any opinions with the PS2s.

 

OT : Can you put 305s without modifications ?
I also have the 5mm spacer option .. can that be tacked on ?

Man Dan, you are driving that thing! I just rolled over 7k. I need a road trip. 17k is pretty good I would say!

 

Have not had an alignment checked yet. Although I suspect it is right on. Historically, Porsche dials in a lot of negative camber and that would explain the rear inside wear.

The 305/30ZR19s fit my XRR rims perfectly as they came that way.

OT,--I should be at the breakfast but keep in mind that the "A-months" are Alternate Vehicle Month and I will be in my silver Vanagon! Drop over and say hi! Suggest you come a bit early. It starts at 9 but lately it would be better to arrive at 8:30. Last week in Camarillo I understand we had a record of attendance,--147 people!!!

 

Dan if you have not had an alignmet have it checked I bet it is off.

mnz50, my car (997 C2S) came with 305's for the rear. A 5mm spacer can be used as well.

 

With the well known negative camber induced rear tire wear of these cars and Porsches apparent close relationship with certain tire manufacturers with their "N" markings, you would think SOMEONE would construct a tire with a harder compound on that crucial inside edge. I would bet tire life could be doubled! (and profits halved - maybe thats the reason...)
