If so, does it show much when viewed fron the front of the car?

I was thinking about buying one but was concerned that it would be too noticeable.

It's not too noticeable from topside. The kit from Performance Products could stand to use a few more connectors to hold it on better (I did it with the nose off).

Naca ducts, I think, not NASA.

The new X51 headers may make it a bit lower pitch in the exhaust sound department.

That should be a good thing. I presume you feel it is worth the cost and time to do this. I'm also considering doing that, especially if it makes it sound a little lower pitched. Does it feel any different, other than in your head as some would suggest?

If it actually results in a change it is impossible for me to really feel. They are larger than the 3.8 stock units and thus could be assumed to sacrifice some mid-range torque for better breathing but I didn't sense the loss.

Weight of the X51 headers is about 3.1 lbs per side. Stock are about 2.5 lbs per side. If anything, I simply appreciate the look of these over the stock.

My next project is to improve the air intake end of this.

What does the NACA duct to the left of the pax front wheel do?

(Yep, it's NACA not NASA... :-)

Very cool pics. Reminds me of the Starwars shot of the underbelly of the spaceship.

993 engines don't have a water jacket around the cylinders and heads like 996/997's do. That water jacket quiets the engine significantly allowing Porsche to eliminate the under engine panels. If heat weren't a concern, panels would be preferred, especially if they could form a diffuser where the air exits the underside, ala Lotus, Ferrari, etc. But, the 997's engine/exhaust packaging do not permit the use of a diffuser so naked she goes.

The 993 under engine tray was designed primarily to reduce the noise from the engine so it would pass very stringent noise standards in some European countries. Most 993 owners remove the tray as it serves no other useful purpose and actually contains a significant amount of heat. The only drawback to removing the tray on an air-cooled car is the enormous clouds of dust that are created when driving on dirt roads or dirty surfaces. That fan blows straigh down through the cylinder fins with impressive velocity!

Prior to the 993, the 964 utilized it's engine cover for the same basic reason although some have called it Porsche's "diaper" because it would contain small oil leaks (for which the 964 was known) very well for extended periods.

That's the history of the undertray as I know it.
