Default Source for replacement battery?

I need to help a friend with a '06 997 S which doesn't get driven much put in a new battery and then get her a small trickle charger (like the Porsche one I use) so the battery doesn't go dead again.
Any good sources other than the dealer? Not sure Costco has one and the local Interstate battery store didn't sound too promising on the phone. I can't take the car there as it is presently dead and I don't trust driving it even after a charge...

You should consider an Optima as they hold their charge for long periods - good for cars that are not driven much.

Good idea- anyone make an adapter to make one fit in a newer 997 911?

As long as the car has been driven more than about 300 miles/month, the battery should be covered under warranty. The battery in my '05 died, & the dealer replaced it for free.

Found this thread looking for info on the OEM battery - does it last well and/or is there a particular better replacement battery that fits? Having had cars that are terrible with batteries (the Mini dealer just told me that if the car isn't driven for a mere two days it very well might not start since it frequently 'wakes itself up to check things'; so much for leaving it at the airport..) I just wanted to know how the stock 997 battery holds up.

And regarding the battery tender, does it work via the lighter or does it need to be hooked up to the battery posts as some cars require?

This is directly from the Porsche web site.

Charger for the battery of your Porsche. Article no. 955 044 900 54

The latest generation of Porsche trickle charger, perfect for maintaining battery charge on vehicles left idle for extended periods. An adapter is available for cars without a cigarette lighter.

I use the above latest generation Porsche trickle charge and it works wonderfully. I open the sunroof enough to get the cigarette connection inside the vech and connect via the vech cigarette lighter connection.

Warning: DO NOT ADJUST THE SUNROOF WITH THE TRICKLE CHARGER WIRE GOING THROUGH THE SUNROOF OPENING!

Scroll down to the last item and you'll see a tray for the Optima. I've installed it and it fits and looks great. http://www.gmgracing.com/porsche_engine.shtml

On my 996 there is a gap cut into the weather stripping on the lower edge of the door which, I believe, is there to accommodate the charger cord so it will not get pinched in the door.

Cool, I hope all 997s come with a lighter plug and I could use one of the non Porsche brand Battery Tenders I have. Sounds like the oem battery is at least somewhat more robust then the BMW/Mini ones, or at least the car doesn't drain it as fast; I don't mind hooking the cars up when they will be sitting for awhile, but I hate to feel like the car can't be relied on because it drains the battery so quickly.

Check out the CTEK chargers from site sponsor apexperformance.net I think Porsche just rebrands the CTEK chargers.
