Well, Each has his own opinion. That's why we have different colors of cars. I would never let any installer work on any of my cars who was not qualified--period. I have never had any electrical issues or loose connections or components. when I traded my Z06 for this 997, the custom sound was really a work of art...but it took a qualified installer.
If I were to critique the hi end Bose system, te only thing I could say is that it is ADEQUATE. But as I said, I rarely ever have it on.
Your post is correct in most ways: if you do not use a qualified installer, then a custom sound system is aliabilty. Done correctly, it is a worthy addition to an already fabulous electronic system

I agree.... actually, in general, OEM sound systems ( particularly upgraded systems like BOSE, HK, etc.) are quite good/not bad. If one were considering what system to have in a Lexus ( or other very quiet car) I might consider spending some big bucks. But forme, a 911 is not quiet inside and, as many others have pointed out, the engine provides great sound entertainment. For me, with 911, the choice would be standard or BOSE as I would only be listening to music occasionally and not in the most quiet/sound optimized environment . Also, as previously indicated the OEM systems are all tested to work well ( electronically) with the electrical/data systems in the car.

Hi,
I have the high end Bose with the six CD player. This is
an awesome stero. Much better then home because I
can crank it up more often. It is the only way to drown
out the tire noise.

Do most of you guys run the BOSE with the AudioPilot on or off? The HK stereo in my M3 would adjust the volume based on road noise and speed, which I liked. However, the BOSE system AudioPilot seems to also adjust the bass which to me results in the bass becoming too boomy.

Yeah, if AudioPilot is on, I typically need to cut the bass to -2...
It also depends on the source CD. Chris Issac - no problem at bass 0 or +1.
Black Eyed Peas - definitely too boomy with AP on, unless I cut bass manually... <g>
