Side Mirrors and bugs
Anyone notice that if a bug hits your mirror at just the right speed with the window down you get splattered with bug juice and bug parts. If I'd wanted to be that close to nature I'd have bought a cabriolet!

You're not driving fast enough. Those Michigan bugs can be pretty huge, though. The June Bugs are my favorite. <g>
John, how's the GT3? I drove a 996 GT3 and fell in love with it... I'm sure that the 997 is just Heaven.

I'm still in my break in period, staying under 4500rpm (mostly). So maybe the bug problem with go away? Atleast the bug guts in my face.

We have gone ahead and contracted for localized bug abatement vehicles to drive ahead of our cars so as to erradicate the problem before it even gets to the car.
Porsche has made some inroads into minimizing the impact of bugs upon the side windows after impacting the mirrors. It's far better than it used to be.
Whistling mirrors are not uncommon with the 997s but can be and should be correctly. A test car I took out in 2005 had that problem and I was fearful that mine would suffer from the same thing. Never a problem. It has to do with sealing the two halves of the mirror correctly.
For the pilots out there, consider revising your "bug speed."

Yepper. The dealer will fix under warrantee. Good thing, too, bc the mirror housing ***'y is $1,800 from Porsche...
The split line on the mirror housing causes the whistle. If you cover it with some blue lo tack painter's masking tape the noise will go away - but it looks like Hell. :-) If you do try this as an experiment, make sure you wrap the tape thru the mirror supports, bc it appears that the main noise comes from that area (between the mirror supports).
The split line is at the bottom of the housing.
If that doesn't fix, the really early 997s had a TSB for a whistle coming from the windshield coping.
Regardless, you should be able to enjoy your car with the windows down.
