Question 997 Problems

Hello Guys from the UK,

I've just joined the forum and have recently traded in my 987 Boxster for an 05 997 Carrera in GT Silver with full blue leather interior with sports seats, heated seats and Carrera S wheels.

I am thrilled to bits with the car but have noticed that the drivers seat backrest has some frayed stitching about where your backside brushes past as you get in which is annoying me and I wonder if anyone else has the same problem or a neat fix? None of the stitching is broken just slightly frayed. The other thing I have noticed is that the car has a rough idle. I can see the passenger seat shake at idle and the tachometer moves up and down. My Boxster was completely smooth. I have been told by my dealer that this is characteristic of 997 911 but I just want to make sure while the car is still under warranty. Also a look underneath at the crankcase shows everything is nice and dry but it seems to have a powdery surface corrosion. I thought there would be a thick waxy layer on the engine to protect it from the elements? If possible I'd like to wipe something on there to protect it a little.

In all other aspects the car is truely awesome and I absolutely love driving it! Any words or wisdom or other experiences?

The idle is smooth in my 997S. That's not correct.

Is the shake only at startup or when the car is fully warmed up??

When fully warmed up as higher rpm when cold seems to make the car not shake so bad cold. The shake is quite high requency so no easily visible from outside the car. the tacho moves up and down all the time by a small amount. Again Boxster Rpm was steady.

Warm idle should be steady is my experience. Lift over the bolster and drop in to minimize seat wear.

My car idles smoothly at startup (at higher rpm, ofcourse) and then settles into a smooth lower rpm a few minutes later. I would disagree with what your dealer is telling you.....

My idle is smooth at all times. The hardest part of trying to minimize wear on the seats is getting out without rubbing that bolster.

Dealers are liars, the honest dealers are the exceptions. Have them take care of the problem before warranty expires.

My is a bit frayed as well, but it's so hard to plop into the seat without rubbing against the bolster, it's so uncomfortable.

The idle should be smooth and the seat (or anything else) should not shake. My gut feeling tells me something...

I would suggest to bring your car to a reputable shop (or another reputable dealer), pay a little money, and order a detailed (and documented) inspection done on the car. Ask them to check the car thoroughly with a fine comb, and document any unusual things.

And then bring the detailed report to the dealer, politely ask them to cross check the car with the report, see how the factory or CPO warranty covers, and go from there.

Best luck, hope everythng checks out ok...

With best regards,

That idle should be smooth. Have it checked now. It shouldn't make the passenger seat shake at all.
Something isn't right. And yes there should be a coating of some type over the engine plate underneath the car. Have both of these issues checked at the dealer where you purchased the car.
