Default My 997S with a Superperformance Super Coupe

Enjoy!

It's one of the new cars built in South Africa with the blessings of Shelby and, I believe, under the supervision of Peter Brock. The motors are sourced from Rousch and this one has the mechanical fuel injection, pushing the 351W to the realm of 550 horsepower. Right now, he's having some tuning issues but it wakes the dead when fired up.

Overall, it's a bad, bad machine.

DIMENSIONS and CAPACITIES:
Wheelbase: 93.2"
Length: 175"
Height 49.2"
Width (Overall): 73.6"
Track Front: 56.5"
Track Rear: 58.3"
Fuel Tank: 21 gal.
Front Wheels: 18" x 8" cast alloy
Rear Wheels: 18" x 10" cast alloy
Tires: Pirelli P Zero Radial
Front 255/45 R18
Rear 285/50 R18
Differential Ratio: 3.46
Curb Weight (11 gal): 2,866 lbs.
Weight distribution:
Front: 46.8%
Rear: 53.2%

CHASSIS: Round tube space frame design that combines a 60's period look, but conforms to modern packaging and engineering requirements. The chasis layout was originally done by Jim Price himself, and then later optimized by the late Bob Negsted and Dan Bamford (of Roush engineering) with the finite element analysis by Wes Shultz of ACT. The torsional stiffness of the chassis alone is in order of 6,000 lbs per degree!

DRIVE TRAIN: The Coupe is designed to take a Ford 351 Windsor engine that can be stroked to 427 cu in. The chassis was engineered for a six speed Tremac T56 transmission. The Coupe is fitted with a 3.46:1 BTR Hydratrack differential, arguably the most modern slip-controlled differential available for road cars today. Roush Technolgies developed the Roush 402 RC engine for the Beta and Gamma prototypes (Alpha prototype competed in the 2000 One Lap of America with an Olthoff-developed engine). The RC develops 501 bhp at 5,900 rpm and 580 ft/lbs of torque at 4,900 rpm, giving the prototype amazing performance figures: 0-60 mph in 3.8 seconds, the standing quarter mile in 11.5 sec and a top speed in excess of 200 mph.

BODY/INTERIOR: With shape and form styled by Peter Brock, the composite body is completely new, with advanced aerodynamics. The front windscreen is a heated and tinted shatterproof unit, the manually operated wind-up side windows are of toughened glasss. The luxurious two-seater leather-trimmed interior is air conditioned, three-point retractable seat belts are standard. Modern Stewart Warner instruments include a 160 mph speedometer, 8,000 rpm tach, water and oil temperature gauges, an oil pressure gauge, ammeter and fuel gauge. These and the standard controls are ergonmically laid out. The cockpit, which offers 35.75" headroom and 4" seat travel, features a full custom-made air conditioner with heating and cooling as well as multi-speed fans and directional control. The dash has a lockable glovebox and space for a radio. A remote immobilzer and remote keyless locks and door opening are standard. A roll bar, a black padded roof liner and a 14"Moto Lita removable steering wheel complete the all-black interior.

SUSPENSION: Bob Negstad together with Don and Wes designed the fully independent suspension. The rear suspension is based on the work Bob and Klaus Arning did in the 60's, a truly unique and impressive unequal A arm design front and rear. All the computer simulations were done by Wes using industry standard ANSYS software.

SHOCKS AND SPRINGS: Bilstein and H&R collaborated to create a purpose built set of coil-overs front and rear.

STEERING: The power-assisted rack and pinion steering has 2.5 turns lock to lock and gives the Coupe a turning circle of 42 ft.

BRAKES: Vacuum-boosted system, Australian PBR calipers with 12.8" x 1.25" vented rotors in front, 12" x 1" in rear. The swept area is 428 sq in, or 310 sq inches per ton.

WHEELS: Cast allow 18" x 8" wheels in front, 18" x 10" at the rear. The wheels are styled similar to the traditional FIA wheel.
Tires of choice are:

Dunlop 9000: 285x50x18 R
255x45x18 F

Pirelli Pzero: 285x45x18 R
255x45x18 F

GENERAL: The radiator has an aluminum core with built-in water to oil cooler. The exhaust system has the original looking side pipes but then goes back through a rear-mounted muffler. Full "race" side mufflers will be available as options. The stainless steel fuel tank is mounted over the rear axle and holds 21 gallons. There are stowage lockers under the rear deck and in the rear wheel wells.

PLEASE NOTE: All Superformance products are supllied complete, but without engines and transmissions. The selection, purchase and installation of the drive train are the responsibility of the purchaser.

I did not drive it nor did I snag any interior pics. I hope to get a ride sometime soon if not today.

Nice, I keep toying with the idea of building a big block factory five roadster.

Anybody else notice the similar design features between the two cars? Like the rounded headlights/lines, the swept back cabin, stubby a$$ end etc?

I'm more of a Shelby Cobra guy myself, I remember in 2001 I think when I was looking you could get their Cobra with a 585hp option

I can't imagine how WILD 585hp in such a simple car would be, bad a$$

That Superformance Coupe looks amazing. I saw one locally and the car looks even better in person.

Cool looking toy but you gotta wonder if it would be a black hole for cops (as in they can't escape its field of attraction).

my experience with cops is that they tend to allow a little more leway with older muscle/sports cars. With a new 997 your less likely to talk yourself out of a ticket...at least thats what i think.

I have decided that my next modification will be straight pipes. The 997 is too tame for my tastes.

I believe there were six original Shelby Daytona coupes made - one that was involved in a huge divorce case (the wife hid it in a barn for years from her husband) was bought by a Philadelphia collector for $4M a few years ago, and as I recall, donated it to a museum, unrestored. They were gorgeous.

Sadly Peter Brock was tragically killed in a West Australian car rally, "Targa WA", driving a similar car (Australian copy of a Shelby Daytona Coupe) September last year. He was an Australian Race and rally driver "icon" and much admired/loved.
