I took your advice and finally stopped procrastinating... (I guess my membership didn't hit yet...)

I recall only two (2) RMS failures and three (3) Intermediate shaft failures reported on 997 web boards Rennlist + rennteam combined... not a scientific poll either, and maybe I missed one along the way--- do a search on both sites and you can verify.

BMW supposedly has their latest version of SMG in the M5/M6 grenading on several cars. Could be FIVE CARS for all I know, internet buzz notwithstanding. Yeah when the cars are out of warranty, expenses can pop up, no doubt about it. A Ferrari 360 Modena 30K major service incl. timing belt is $3K, of course NOT covered under warranty. A McLaren F1 exhaust system replacement runs $15K.

Porsche's 4/50K warranty is decent -- at least in the U.S. ......drive your car to 40K miles then trade it in or sell it before warranty expires if you're that worried about it.

If your RMS fails out of warranty: worst case scenario= $800. , same as the price of a day or two at the track, a dozen tankfulls of gas, blah blah....

Yup you figured me out, I’m a troll, (have no idea what you are though) wonder if you have owned 3 or more 911's (hmm I have) , wonder if you ever rebuilt a 911 engine in your cellar ( hmmm I did - it was a 2.2 liter - took 3 months - no warranty - gave it a shot - worked out great) . yup I’m a troll, only more than 30 years of owning Porsches (lots of trips to the dealer for warranty service) yup I’m a troll , oh well, did get some comical relief out of some of the replies, not depressed anymore. Think Ill go for a drive. Oh yes it will be in my 997S. Hmmm maybe I will sell my A6 so I can get some big bucks. No more problems or posts for me

I'd stay out of single engine aircraft also. Engine failure on takeoff could ruin your day. But thousands do it for thousands of hours. If pilots sat in their kitchen and drank beer in fear of every little thing that could happen, well they wouldn't be pilots just alcoholics. That's not very fun is it?

I honestly don't know too many people that could take a $20K hit just out of the blue and not sweat it...

Its possible (but would need to check with the more learned people here) that on an aircraft takeoffs are optional but landings are mandatory, wonder if that logic can be used with a car.

Had no idea that PMS could stike so many people at the same time, interesting

Takeoff is optional just the same as driving your car is optional, only flying is much more fun than driving (IMHO), Class B airspace not included!
