I suppose I could have paid cash for it and sold it in 4 yrs for 64% of the msrp. Then It would net me a total of about 20k out of pocket. The lease over three years is costing me under 25k out of pocket. Of course there is the matter of the growth on that 50k, which I get to keep. Hmm that's more than the 5k over three years that I earn after taxes. The factory sponsored lease cost me LESS than buying outright. Was that so hard?

Wow, you are an arrogant little boy aren't you?
I guess your little sum might work over one cycle but do that too often and it simply doesn't add up.
The idea that the lease companies are somehow making this a financially advantageous deal in your favor is, um, how did you put it, challenged thinking....
Each to their own.

It also depends on if there are any dealer incentives from PCNA to clear out the older model cars. Back in 2004 when the 40th Anniversary models were out they stickered for $92-96K. Dealers were offering them for up to $20K off due to the retail markup from invoice being about $12K and Porsche issuing a $10k dealer incentive.
putt-putt,
You need to look at what the value of the car will be when the lease expires to determine how good of a deal it is. With that lease you are paying $22.6K to use the car for 3 years for a car that will sell for about $43K new. By comparison a new 04' 330Ci sold for about $37K with the typical options and discounts new. 3 years later, it now sells for $27-30K. I would expect the value of that 335i to be just over $30k in 3 years. You don't have to look very hard at the numbers to understand it would be far more advantageous to buy and sell the car in 3 years than lease. You would be about $10K ahead to buy over leasing. Leases are rarely to the advantage of the buyer over buying. The primary advantages to leasing is as a business expense, and avoiding taking a big hit with high depreciation on some vehicles (Jaguars and Cadillacs for example). Mercedes for one has been putting out some extremely competitive leases over the last couple of years. On C-class vehicles and ML's they have been offering leases that are far more competitive than BMW or Audi on the same class of vehicles and a lease cost matching the depreciation cost of buying. In December they were leasing C280 4matics for $100 less a month and a $1000 lower down that a BMW 325i or A4 2.0T.

I'd have to sell the car for 31k after three years to end up at a 19k net cost. The 64% residual after three years on that car places it's value at about 30k, so it's close. That said, I'll keep my cash in my pocket everytime, thank you.
To think the car will be worth more is foolish optimism.

To further clarify I'll use YOUR NUMBERS. The 43k 330ci will cost $46,500 with tax. If it sells for 30k (doubtful but, ok) after three years, it the net cost would be $16,500. Add to that the interest lost on the $46,500 I had to pay out in cash (@5% about $2300) and you're at $18,800.
LLLLOOOLLLL that's what my lease is costing me. Too funny. People better wise up about leasing. Bottom line. A factory sponsored lease at a very low rate, after a good discount off msrp, can be as good as buying and selling. The only way to beat it is to keep the car a long long time, or to get a very special car that breaks all rules, like the 993.

Don't think about the financial side of this. Buying a Porsche is never about the 'deal' or the money saved or less depreciation. It's about DRIVING a fine automobile. If you focus upon the financial figures you will wind up buying and driving a Ford FOCUS.

Porsche to Focus
Hehe, just couple weeks ago at Barrier Porsche to replace my turn signal module (won't click back), they gave a Ford Focus for rental car. I almost had to pay for it because I didn't buy the car there.
Not sure if they did it on purpose or not, but I do appreciate my 996 more after I got my car back. .... Image you spent close to 100k to buy a brand new Porsche and all you got for loaner is a Ford Focus from Enterprise which stinks inside of the car (at least the one I got stinked), that's definitely financially sound for the dealer no matter how you look at it.

hello board....update....the 06cs2 was sold for 12k off and was a demo with miles for test drives, i drove it last week and was ok and not optioned as i wanted, I wanted 15k off and they said would have to think about it....we played tele tag during the week then said it was sold by another salesperson to an out of state buyer....case done.....i did test drive the targa new and was a nice ride yet too optioned and a bit too much, there are some cabs out there yet do not want to go there with living in the midwest area, their discounts range around 10 to 12k off that i have discussed with various dealers....for the 07's 5 to 8K seems to be the going rate so far depending on the options....some cars on the lots have lots of useless options to jack up the overalll price as we all know....well going to check out next week again what is available...most of the sales people said they will move more on the price at the end of each month....will continue update midweek.....anyone else currently looking around with any new info???

Boxsterdoc47 - Thanks for the update. Sorry the '06 didn't work out for you. Are you starting to feel more comfortable about the price negotiation process? I am guessing you are starting to get a good idea of the flexability the dealers have with their pricing. Good luck on your continued search!
