Speak loudly and carry a big stick sounds like something our current president (George W Bush) might have said. Wish we had a guy like old Teddy we could look to these days....
Your misquote is a common misunderstanding of what TR actually said. No worries.

One of the best Republican presidents we ever had. Wish we had someone like him right now for some no nonsense approach to the turmoil of today.

No, no a comment and his botching the english language. The point I was making was that Teddy believed in the subtle use of diplomacy with the even more subtle threat of force -- GWB talks loudly (think wild west threats) and nothing subtle about his use of force -- not a good strategy in the long run....

Like the sign above that fateful pavillion in Jonestown, Guyana, "Those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it" the leaders of today are forgetting to learn from history.

And if you want to enclose someone's post in quotation just like I did here, click on the closed parentheses to the right of that.

"Still, I wonder if the irony of having the George Santayana quote in the Jonestown pavilion – “those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it” – was a final black joke from Jones."
