Question Assorted Maintenance Items

A few items that need attention @ 1700 miles.

1) Slow speed (20 mph and lower) brake squeal is back. Thoroughly rinsing the brakes (when cold of course) only worked for about 2 weeks. High speed hard braking did nothing to quiet this down. As I mentioned previously, never had this problem with a Porsche before; MB yes, Porsche no. BTW, the only way it was permanentely corrected on the MB's were to change the pads and rotors and on the last MB just changing the rotors did the trick (car had about 1200 miles).

2) Sunroof weather seal is making a rubbing noise when the car goes up/down(in reverse) an incline. What does Porsche use to lube/quiet the rubber seal?

3) Quite a few posts lately about dead batteries etc, I've noticed on the two 997S's I've owned, the starter spins rather lethargically when cranking, wondering why this is or if it may be related to poor/defective batteries?

I welcome comments or suggestions....

1.) My low speed squeek went away after about 6 threshold braking events from 120-20mph. Of course, that's hard to do unless you can find a convienent, newly built industrial park nearby with a 1/2 mile long new concrete boulevard. Head down one side, build speed to 120, activate ABS. DON'T STOP! Loop around, cool brakes at about 40-50mph, then loop back and do the 120-20 cycle again. Don't rinse, but repeat 5 or 6 times. My brakes are silent now. YMMV - this is not a scientific exercise.

2.) I use Gummi-Pflege from Einszett. I think the dealer uses the same on seals. M-B repackages the stuff, so does BMW.

3.) I got lucky with a solid battery. I do agree that, after 2 weeks parked, the starter spins rather slowly. Get a Porsche battery tender and get it over with.

Just MHO. Good luck!

Assuming you are using the OE pads, and you are confident you did the bedding appropriately, that's about all you can do. There are lots of anti-squeal compounds available, but I doubt if any are as effective as the sound dampers that come on the OE pads. There are low-noise/low-dust pads available, and they are fine for street use; just won't hold up under lots of heat.

Thanks Don.

Yesterday I tried four hard braking stops from about 90 to 20 with no change.

I will locate the Gummi-Pflege for the roof.

I find it amazing we now have to get battery tenders...never had the need for this with past Porsches, MB's, BMW's or Ferraris I've owned; I can understand the need for a tender is a car if left for a couple of months but anything less makes me believe Porsche needs better batteries. I wonder if anyone upgraded to a better battery?

Probably vibration from the back of the pad not sitting properly. I always use rubberized anti brake squeal spray on the back of pad to prevent just this problem.
