I had both. My 996tt was midnight blue and previous car metalic black. Yes, the m blue looks more unique but:

a) when clean the black looks much better. I never had the desire to detail m blue because it never looked "stunning". The car was always half dirty and it looked good as such.
b) m blue has "purple" feeling in a direct sunlight. I did not like how the car looked in sun at all. On the other hand it looked great with overcast.

So, if you are goint to use it as a daily driver in maily overcast climate and not wash it often go with the m blue. You have to get full black interior though to match. O/w get the black.

I am going to order 997tt so far my color choice is 90% basalt/black; 10%m blue/black.

I hope this helps.

Another thing. My neighbor just got the targa 4s in carmon red with black interior and turbo wheels. I would never think of getting this color on targa 4s but it looks just simply amazing in person.

Also, the color that may be look better on targa than m blue is Atlas.

Default is this basalt?

I believe this is basalt, and it looks great.

Basalt looks great - but I'm biased because that's what I have. I see alot of Black and Silver 911s in my neck of the woods so the Midnight should be more unique!

My wife and I today looked at a midnight blue Targa 4 (base, not S) with sand interior today. We both thought it was elegant and actually nicer looking than all the other 997 Targas we've seen so far, so I take back my earlier statement. It is neat how this color has purple undertones when looking at the reflection of a low winter sun!

IMO (I am also a bit biased):
Basalt + Terracotta/black > Midnight Blue + Sand Black.
