You need more amps to make a senstive unit like V1 or 8500.

Notice the S2 is verrrry cleverly advertised as far as mention of it's range is concerned; it is NEVER compared to 12v corded units.

ALSO: it is asleep a large portion of the time to conserve battery power.

I'd only use it for puttering around town where you already know cops hang out.
You may be right Marcel, but I've had an S2 for about 4 years and have always had plenty of warning time. Zero problems. My point is that the little cordless thing is plenty powerful.

You always hear how great the V1 is from its users. How great of a range it has etc.

The bottom line for any detector is does it give you sufficient warning to avoid tickets? That is the only relevent metric. I don't care if some detector will warn you 100 miles ahead. Are people with S2s or other detectors getting tickets? If not than the point is moot.....

I think maybe I have a defective unit. Many times when my friends' 8500 and V1 has alerts, I don't. What the 12V's detected were not false alerts when we were on highways!
Once or twice I pass instant on's dead ahead (sort of) but no alerts. A few of the times I see speed cameras went off but no alerts!
I am ordering a Valentine. When u cannot trust one, just abandon it. I would rather get false alerts than no alerts!

I have used Solo & now S2 for years. Very reliable. DO NOT use the visor mount.!! When you pull up the front seat, it hits the detector and it comes crashing down. I was lucky.

All these detectors have pretty good range. Sometimes the range is far greater than you can imagine. It is often attributable to atmospheric ducting, where conditions are just right to extend the range of these units, particularly if they are sensitive enough in the first place.

I guess any radar detector is better than nothing but once you hardwire a 12V detector to switched power you don’t have to worry about turning the detector on and off and you are assured of always being protected plus you never have to worry about having fresh batteries. Once hardwired to switched power all you have to do is set the volume and forget it.

What sucks about hard wired is that its visible all the time. Can't hide it. I often go without a detector, even though I have a V1 and an S2, simply because its a pain to take it down, put the suction cups on, etc.

I don't know how anyone can use a detector that doesn't have directional arrows or multiple bogey capability. You never know where the threat is coming from otherwise. Batteries eventually go low on juice and affect the sensitivity. If you don't like wires, hardwire it and tuck away the wires. IMO - Sometimes convenience and cost savings are not worth the risk to your driving record!

Perhaps true, that corded is better than cordless.
But people who buy cordless did not buy the S2 becoz' they are the best detector, they bought it coz' it is the best cordless around!

I use rechargeables with my S2, and they last me about a week, more or less,
depending on distance traveled/time used. It's not difficult to check the battery level everytime you turn it on or off.
We do check our fuel gauge everytime we drive the car don't we?
And we do have to fill up when it's empty. Well, I think recharging the batteries is a little easier than filling up at the gas station.

I have a valentine and it saved me from instant on. We were on the highway down to Las Vegas from Reno. The cop was traveling behind a bobtail truck coming from the opposite direction about 5 miles ahead . the Valentine sniffed him out and I reduced speed from 100 to 60. Sure enough when I came around the profile of the truck he illuminated me. The valentine was a great companion through the southwest...it saved me a number of times.
