I've given this some thought also. Covering it you will still end up with stuff in there and no way to clean it out. IMO, open is the best answer.

Yep, they're called "condenser combs" and you can get them in different pitches from any HVAC supply store... about 2 USD, soft plastic, work like a charm.

If the guy behind the counter says "you mean a fin straightener?" - you'll know you 're on the right track. <g>
