Question How to remove..

Anyone know the correct way to remove the center AC vent module? I have a nasty rattle somewhere in there and would like to have a closer look.

Thanks

Thanks Brad but I enjoy locating and repairing rattles (just don't like them in the first place), I used a pair of hemostats which released the clips and helped to pull it out; it appears the rattle is coming from within the vent unit, i'll know for sure tomorrow after a drive with the unit removed.

I had the same thing (997C2S). This forum led me to TSB #9025 which described the noise exactly. I showed it to my dealer, they agreed and the car is going in on Monday.

But as a separate issue, if anyone knows how to remove the instrument cluster, I'd be grateful if you could let me know.

Thanks.

No, 500, not specifically the air vent; the TSB refers to, "....buzzing noise near the instrument cluster....". Basically, the noise comes from excess tolerance between (a) the dash and the instrument cluster and (b) the locating pins in the back of the cluster and their respective sockets.
In my car the noise - initally - was difficult to pin down; I guess the empty space behind the dash acted like a speaker-box. Anyway, after investigation (and some help from these guys here) I tracked it down. I eliminated it altogether by cutting some felt strips and slipping these between the cluster and the dash with a credit-card. Worked great - the noise stopped - but I'm getting the Porsche fix anyway.

Rattles and buzzes are a bitch, aren't they? Yet extraordinarily satisfying to mend, I find. My previous Audi TT had almost 100,000miles yet was quiet as the grave inside, rattle free. Brilliant build quality, unlike anything I've ever owned (997 included).

Thanks for the clarification. I think I remember telling you about the credit card and felt trick in a older post when you were asking about a dash rattle and I'm glad it helped. I took out the center AC vent unit and after many miles of testing today the noise appears to be completely gone; I'll ask the dealer to replace the unit with a new, and hopefully quieter one. Funny thing is, if you shake the unit it does not rattle but put it down on a hard surface and lightly tap on it and you can hear the rattle For the short time I owned it, my white 07 997S was rattle free and I look forward to this car being rattle free too.
