I had the same thing (997C2S). This forum led me to TSB #9025 which described the noise exactly. I showed it to my dealer, they agreed and the car is going in on Monday.
But as a separate issue, if anyone knows how to remove the instrument cluster, I'd be grateful if you could let me know.
Thanks.

No, 500, not specifically the air vent; the TSB refers to, "....buzzing noise near the instrument cluster....". Basically, the noise comes from excess tolerance between (a) the dash and the instrument cluster and (b) the locating pins in the back of the cluster and their respective sockets.
In my car the noise - initally - was difficult to pin down; I guess the empty space behind the dash acted like a speaker-box. Anyway, after investigation (and some help from these guys here) I tracked it down. I eliminated it altogether by cutting some felt strips and slipping these between the cluster and the dash with a credit-card. Worked great - the noise stopped - but I'm getting the Porsche fix anyway.
Rattles and buzzes are a bitch, aren't they? Yet extraordinarily satisfying to mend, I find. My previous Audi TT had almost 100,000miles yet was quiet as the grave inside, rattle free. Brilliant build quality, unlike anything I've ever owned (997 included).
