gas cap on a string
I was wondering what everyone who lives in full service gas station area does about the gas cap which is attached to the filler area with a string.
It seems that most of the gas jockeys around here dont know that there is a hook on the fuel lid that is used to hang the cap. Most of them just let it hang down rubbing the fender. I think over time this will show as wear.
So what to do? Let it go or jump out of the car before the guy gets to it and open it yourself? Its too difficult to expain it to these people how to do it correctly...if they even speak english. Does any one else find this annoying?

The cap doesnt hit it but the string does and im sure it wear the paint down over time. Yup im in NJ so no choice.
I thought i saw post on the 987 forum with someone who posted a pic showing some abrasions on the lip of the fender.
Im sure if you are careful it wont be a problem but....the gas station attendants in NJ...well dont give a s*** about YOUR expensive car. They'll over fill and spill gas over in an attempt to get a round figure on the purchase.
Anyway just my gripe when i filled up today.

Yes, very annoying here in NJ. I've "trained" a some attendants at a few local stations. ONce you point out the hook you can almost see the light bulb go off

Wow, I didn't realize there were still states that only had full service.
I suspect over time (5 years?) it would probably have an impact on the paint.
I can see a few options:
Live with it
Jump out and preempt them
Remove the string
Move to another state

Yes, there is a hook. Open the filler lid, look at the lower right portion of the lid as it extends from the car body. The "hook" is about 1/2" wide and allows the filler cap to hang by its cord, clear of the body.

With a car such as this being so over engineered did you think they would just allow you to let the cap dangle like that? it just wouldn't look right.
