Default First gear Problems

Have noticed since I got my car that sometimes I have problems getting it into first gear. I am talking about when the car is completely still.

Just reached 2k miles last night. Was sitting at a stoplight and put the car in neutral so I could take my foot off the clutch for a second.

Couldnt get it back in gear! This is not the first time this has happened.

Never had this problem in my 02. Is there something wrong with my transmission? anybody else having these problems?

Thanks in advance!

First gear is occationally "notchy" on mine, too. I notice it more when it is cool (50s or less). Do you have a short shifter? Those are known to be stiff when the temps drop.

That is not normal on a warm tranny and I would insist that the dealer correct it, Be assured that they will probably try to get you to accept this as normal for the car, and you may have to push to get it fixed.

Again, it is NOT normal and the tranny should easily slide into 1st gear when moving slowly or at a complete stop. They will probably tell you that you have to put it into 2nd gear before 1st, and this is also not true. Putting it in 2nd first may help, but should not be necessary.

You only have 2K on the clock, give it a couple more thousand miles. It will loosen up.

Michael...
I rarely experience this problem as well however the car definitely did this much more frequently when it was 'younger.' It's now over 250 hours running time and this notchiness thing is almost extinct.
If it's happening frequently, bring it in,...otherwise I would give it some time.

Over time my car began acting like that, then the shifter cable snapped (at @ 20k miles). Maybe have it checked out...don't let limp stick happen to you...

Wow Dave, I didn't know you had 35,000 miles on the clock already!!!

I had the exact same thing happen twice in the first 3K. I now have 8.5K and it's never happened again.

I would have the dealer look at it now so there is NO question that the problems exists. Otherwise, some dealers will not cover it, claiming that you damaged the syncro's by shifting improperly.

Sport Shifter - lossened up around 2,500 as well - now even when cold it's not too bad (38 degrees out the other day before the engine was cranked) but once warmed up it is soooooooooooooooooooo great as was about ten minutes!!!!

Yep, miles will do it. At 6,000 on the clock, the notchiness in my shifter is gone. First can be tough in general with a cold trans, but should be like buttah when it's warmed up...

If it won't go into 1st, try selecting second, then back to first. That'll work, too.

No problems getting into 1st (even when cold) or notchiness with sport shift (7K on the odo).

The sad thing is that my average speed is only around 20-something mph as I live and work within a city....I live for the weekend roads!

I have the sport shifter and have this same exact problem.
Only have 600 miles on the clock and the car is stuck in the garage because of all of this Colorado snow.
Sucks!!!
