Big Decision
Another new guy question. After spending the last six years with Boxsters and a family Cayenne, I'm moving into the 911 world. Getting close to retirement I've convinced my lovely Wife that I should get one more P car. It's probably going to be my one shot at getting something I'll really enjoy & can still afford. I really had fun autocrossing the Boxsters and did the PDE course (996's) a few years ago. No DE events yet, but would like to at least see how the cars handle on a track. So my issue is one that many of you have discussed on this and other forums. AWD or 2WD. Thinking ahead as this will be my daily ride and something that may hit occasional weather, I placed an order for a 4S Coupe, adding some goodies that will be fun on the road but also for autocrossing/DE (powerkit, Sport chrono, sport shift, etc). My issue is that the dealer has no 4S Coupe allotments and is having trouble trading other dealerships. At this point I have no commitment on a possible build date. I'm concerned that I may be waiting for 5-6 months. Should I take all of the options planned for the 4S and put them on a 2S that I can get sooner? I'd really appreciate any advice on experience with allotments and whether a 2S will be the right choice for my "last" Porsche? Thanks
I was sort of in a similar situation, this sounds crazy-well to me it did. But go scour E-bay! That's where I got mine!

Given your history, you know how to drive RWD P cars and you are used to a relatively light car in the boxster. Also, I doubt weather is much of an issue in NC. That said, you should have no issues with a CS. However, if it were me and I really believed this is the end of the line, I'd go for an F430.
Another thought. If the rumors are true Porsche will be launching 997.5 sometime in the Fall of 07 and an 08MY car which may have a slight increase in power, may have LED lights, may have PTM from the TT, etc., etc.
You could put an order in for one of the early MY08 C4S's and just sit tight with what you have for 9 months, or look for a used C4S to fill in until the new car arrives. Or if you can't wait look for what dealers have on their lots right now and compromise a little on spec.
My 2c's would be to wait for the 997.5 and put an order in for your exact dream spec and spend 9 months dreaming.

It's hard enough to wait for a C2S! If I was heading for retirement soon I would not wait. Thats go-time the way I look at it
The C2S can handle weather conditions and is a perfect "last" Porsche. That was my .02's
Best of luck with your decision.

Check other dealers. I saw two C4S's just unloaded in Houston this weekend. I know they (at least one) aren't spoken for. I also believe they have a Feb or March build C4S available that can be tailored to your needs. Sorry, I grabbed the April allocation/May delivery yesterday.
Thanks for the encouragement. My Dealer promised me an answer this week of whether he can get anything firm on a C4S order. If not, you've convinced me that the CS would be a great last Porsche. I'll let you know how this ends. I just know that there is no way I can wait 6-9 months!
I live at 8,000 feet and have recently had a 996 C4 as well as a (wife's) Audi TT quattro. My experience is that 4wd on a sports car does virtually nothing in bad weather unless you also change out the tires. As you might guess, our daily drivers are Jeeps, and more than once had to pull the P-car or TT out of an inch or two of snow because they were shod with summer tires - so much for awd.
I'm ordering a C2S and I'm sure that my heart-of-the-Rockies weather is worser than NC's. Less expensive, lighter and less to go wrong down the road.

Went through the C4S vs. C2S decision. Spent more than 3 months trying to decide. After driving both a few more times decided there wasn't enough difference to justify the time/$ difference and I bought a C2S. Have been VERY HAPPY!!!
If i knew then what I know now I would have pulled the trigger on the C2S from the start. The C4S does have a wider rear (which is nice), but I believe the C2S is the right choice for me.
Good luck.

Drove both cars many times before making my decision....The C2S was even in my first color choice...I bought the C4S and would have not had it any other way. It's my daily driver and am very pleased with looks, performance and knowing that I have AWD.......PERIOD! Love my car!
I am also in NC, and was in the same position you are regarding dealer allotment when I ordered my 2006 C4S Cabriolet last February. Mt sales manager called the PCNA District Sales Rep (should be the same one you have), and was able to get an extra car "alloted". Check with your Sales Manager to see if he has gone this route. Best of luck.

I received my C4S 3 weeks ago. I cannot believe the performance of this car. This is the best car that I've ever had (I had Mercedes, BMWs, Audi, and other cars made in the U.S. - probably 35 cars in my life). If you don't want a Turbo, get the C4S. Call Champion Porshe in Pompano Beach and talk to Larry Reynolds. He is one of the best sales guys I've ever dealt with.

I'm with Rick on this one - here in NC it snows/ices so infrequently that I would never consider buying AWD/4WD just for the weather, and even if you did do that, you'd need new tires anyway. The high performance/Summer tires that come on these cars will be useless in any kind of snow.
Buy/order the C2 exactly how you want it. Take the money that you saved by not getting the C4 and buy another set of wheels, put some snow tires on them or at least some M&S all-season crap and use them for the two months a year that something might happen.
Enjoy!
