Default Porsche 911 Newbie - BMW loss

Last year I got the new car bug. I test drove the 911 and liked it, but my wallet and common sense kept telling me no. I have a couple of BMWs and was interested in the yet to be unreleased M3. Great performance and much cheaper than the 911.

Anyway, after waiting a year, BMW release the 335 coupe (which I test drove). The car is powerful and I am generally liking it. But that is all. I just like it. It is cheaper than the Porsche. My wallet is telling me to get the Beemer. I keep studying the BMW from all angles. I am trying to find a angle where the car looks good and I just cannot find it. I look at the 911 and I cannot find an angle where the car looks bad. The 911 is sexy.

I broke down last weekend and ordered one. Thanks BMW for pushing me over the edge. I would have never made the plunge if BMW had some styling in their new coupe. I know the M series will be out and it will probably be nicer to look at than the 335, but by then I will have maybe 6 months to a year of drive time behind my new baby.

The 911 is my dream car. I have wanted one since I was 10-15. I hope that it will be all that I read it is.

My only delima: will the car be a daily driver or will I keep it flawless under cover in the cozy garage?

IMO there's only one way to get a good return on your considerable investment in the 997, and that is to drive it whenever possible. Your car will depreciate even when it sits in your garage, so why not let allow your car do what it was designed to do, and that is to be driven.

I came from a string of BMWs the last 2 being M cars. Great cars but not Porsches.
Aesthetics are personal and the M-3 was a beautiful car but not quite as much "look back" appeal to me as the 911. However, the real beauty in these cars is their driving dynamics. Drive the car. Maybe not every day but they are not meant to be garage queens.

My M-3 had under 10K miles in 4 years and I did not get more than $500. more for this perfect car than if it was 'enjoyed" more. I like my cars "perfect", clean etc so I am not venturing out in any snow storms but I do drive it whenever possible. Enjoy its true beuty--the view from the drivers seat.

I too came to own a 997 S Cab after a string of BMWs ('93 325is/'95 325is/'98 528/'00 540/'02 M3/'02 X5/'03 X5 - BMW replacement/'03 325ix/'04 645 coupe/'05 645 Cab). I still have 3 cars so while not a daily driver ( I do have a 5 year old daughter that I pick up from school 3 days a week) I do drive it on the weekends and maybe 1 - 2 days per week. The cars really are meant to be driven, yet I only live 5 miles from work, which is not even enough mileage to get the car warmed! That being said, it is a totally different experience from driving ANY BMW - the Porsche is a performance drivers car with a touch of luxury (if optioned), while the BMW a luxury car that has some performance.

Congratulation and welcome aboard… The Porsche is a driver’s car, so drive it often!

Daily driver. As Dan (Edgy01) and others have said "Who in the Hell are you saving it for? The next owner?".

Talk to MJones, he's the ultimate 997 daily driver. I would have it no other way. Drive it daily! (hey, it's replaceable... it's not a 993 C4S.... :-)

Just MHO,

-don

I understand your feeling. I had an E46 328Ci and then an E46 M3, which I drove daily. Great car. When I first ordered it I thought to myself "It's a major purchase, maybe I should get a beater and only drive the M3 on nice days". Pffft... the heck with that. Why have it and not drive it? I never did get clear bra on the M3 and it still looked great 4 years and 50k miles later.

So, with the 997S that should be completed at the factory on 11/16, I will get clear bra and will drive it every day that I can. I'll garage it during the winter and drive my Jetta then.

Keep reminding yourself that it's just a car, can be repaired or replaced...

Lot of ex-BMW owner moving to Porsche 911 I see. I am one as well, last BMW was E39 M5. Haven't looked back since trading her in... second thought, that's not true, the E39 was a great car. I miss her sometimes, but not enough to trade the 911.

I agree with the rest, use it as a daily driver.

You are going to suffer some depreciation in any car you buy - Porsche or Beemer (less in the P Car I guess) but the difference in depreciation over a car that has been driven or just looked at in the garage is not that huge! Drive it everyday!

I own both and I see nothing wrong with not necessarily using the Porsche as a daily driver. I plan to keep mine for a very long time and it's far more enjoyable to not worry about it at sketchy parking places and in stop n' go traffic. It makes it more of a treat too when I switch back to the Porsche for a drive.

I avoided BMWs all my life. Maybe it was because I lived in Germany for many years and the BMW was just so ordinary,--and very common there. (As it is now here in the USA). Why the BMW is considered to be competition to the Porsche is beyond me. As a result, I stayed with Porsches since I was a teenager. Drive it,--as often as possible. Enjoy it.

I got ED on the first batch of E90s last year (May 20th). I love BMWs. Great cars. I also love Porsches. I'm not enough of an expert to explain the difference, but they are great in their own way. But, I don't see one vs. the other, meaning I don't see them competing IMHO. Enjoy the car.

I can't agree more with you. I think the look of the new BMW's are horrible. I come from BMW's, and had 5 in the past. I like the look of the old BMW's much better. With regards to the 997, you can't go wrong. It will offer you a driving experience second to none. Forget BMW, think 997
