As far as replacing the M5, I do think I will check out some of these hopped-up Audis I have been seeing. It appears they have come a long way. After owning several, I am off the Mercedes thing for a while- just too many visits for service- mostly computer issues (oh- and a few bent wheels on the E55- I swear you hit an acorn and they bend)
Love some feedback on a really fun-driving sedan to haul the kids in.

Had a 2/06 BMW 330 XI.....HATED the car........Now have '06 997 C4S.... BMW seems to me, IMO, an old farts car.......NOT a sports car.....just a sedan that can get out of its way...Nothing more....just a sedan....

icon...The wife just bought another X3 and we really like the vehicle very much. The 330 XI did everthing it was suppose to do....my car was loaded with every optin and it handled very well. But it was no Porsche, and it's my fault thinking it was going to handle as such. I had a 500 SL that I sold and that car was a terrific touring vehicle and comfortable to "ride" around. It also was no Porsche, performed as advertised, but no seat of the pants thrill. I did not mean to trash BMW's.....I just was so disgusted with the car....I never should have purchased it. Nothing wrong with it....just not what I was looking for..Actually, I had been looking for a Z8 for quite sometime.....that's probably the one BMW I would have kept for a long time...

Another vote for Audi... the latest S6 comes with a detuned Gallardo V10 doing 0-60 in 5.1s in a big AWD sedan. I have never been a huge fan of the Audis, I drove an S4 for a little while. However, just recently I was fortunate enough to have an RS4 for an afternoon. That put a complete spin on Audis for me - it is EXCEPTIONAL. It doesn't have that same "understeer happy pig" feeling that the S4 did for me, this thing is AWD biased to rwd and is a very very sharp handling. When I can get a good deal on one, I have no doubt I will own an RS4. Assuming the newly redesigned S6 is anything like the RS4, I bet you'd be mighty happy with it. Anyways, a test drive certainly couldnt hurt!

The wheel feel is total connection to the road, and acceleration is awesome. What a car! The 500 hp M5 now sits in the garage! I could care less about it. My fifth 911, but THIS one is IT!! The factory nailed it with the 997s.
Please do me a favor and share with "the less informed" that the C4s is awesome on drive pavement and its advantages can be had without snow or ice on the ground. It is one of my pet peeves that people think you only need a C4s if you live in an area that is covered in ice during the winter.

Ron, no doubt a C4S is awesome on drive pavement. Any 911 is awesome on drive pavement. But what people are talking about is the COMPARISON between AWD and RWD. And as awesome as the AWD car might be on dry surface, it is not AS awesome as the lighter, more easily rotatable RWD car.

As such, unless a AWD car is needed because of bad weather, you get MORE AWESOME-NESS from a RWD car.

p.s. - You can call me less informed but since I own a AWD 997 Turbo and a RWD 993 Carrera S, AND I track both cars, I think I am qualified to make the statement that a RWD 911 has it's advantages..

However, I would also like to add, because an AWD car has a larger margin for error, I think most super vehicles that have 480hp plus, could be served very well having a wider margin of error with an AWD system.

I owned a 2005 Carerra S (launch car) for a bit before buying this C4S. I certainly didn't buy the AWD for bad weather (at least for snow and ice) because the very wide performance tires still make it iffy on that stuff. In rain, however, I do think think the 4S is superior handling wise. No arguement that RWD seems to be the choice of serious racers. I am no professional driver, and like the added control of the AWD. Also, while I am sure it will reveal my shallowness, I also like the slightly wider rear end of the 4S. Ask any woman, 44mm additional is certainly not a negative

I did get to drive the Quattroporte for a three hour trip recently. Wonderful lines- no question. On the highway it was impressive. Slow, around town, the transmission was clunkly with wierd delays and thumps etc. Not sure if there was a problem, or that was just how the tranny is on that car.

I had an SMG 6 series and had to trade it in after only a few months. The automatic mode shifting was just terrible. No one wanted to drive the car.

My Targa 4S had been built and should be on its way... I can't wait to drive it, especially in light of this thread.

As a tracker you'll certainly recognize the difference in handling feel that a 244 lbs. weight penalty would make... that's the weight difference between a 997 C4S and a 997 turbo.

Personally, I'd be the first to agree that the C4S feels slightly heavier in the front when compared to the CS I traded for it, especially at parking lot speeds. Though I'd be first to point out that the C4S feels stickier, grippier, and more like a traction monster from outer space at high speeds than the CS.

That said, I can't wait to get hold of a GT3... basically for the incredible motor though.
