Default Flat Tire - Owned less than a week...

I'm haveing a bit of bad luck in my first week of ownership.

I've been so excited about the car that I've been driving it everyplace, and managed to get a flat on the way to work.

By the time I realized this I had managed to take out the tire pretty well, so I will be making my first tire purchase a little sooner than expected.

The guy that towed me in to the dealer told me this was the 8th Porsche he's picked up this week for flat tires...

Interesting thing is that the dealer charges around $560 for just the tire (rear pilot sport n1), but they run $479 shipped at the tire rack. My service peep said I should order the tire from the tire rack, because they can't discount the in-stock tires - and they didn't mind this...

I'll probably get hit with a $100 mounting and balancing...

Bummer.

FYI I got NTB to match TireRack's price. Oh, and their road hazard insurance is priced much lower than Porsche's.

Do the 997 use run flats? Are yours run flats?

The 997 does not have run-flats. Nor a spare...just a compressor with goo.

We've covered this issue a bit in the past,--how incredibly easy it is to get something stuck in them.

I happened to elect an extensive warranty which includes free tire and wheel replacement insurance (road hazard). It might be something to consider, based upon the incredible price of tires when needed on the spot.

hahaha, that's why you're buying new tires!
I did the same on my bimmer's rear too. Shredded the tire into 2 halves!
These low profile performance tires have very stiff sidewalls,
you wouldn't be able to spot one with low air pressure easily at a glance.
If it's a front, at least you can feel it. But rears usually show little symptoms on a casual drive.

Let me guess...yours was a rear right tire...

Yup it was a rear, driver side though.

I Know where it happened too... I drove through an accident scene, and had to drive through radiator fluid. The car felt a bit loose after it, and I thought it was the fluid sticking on the tires, so I ignored the symptoms of the flat...

I must have picked up something there.

Needless to say, the tire is no longer in usable shape after a 20 min romp on the freeway...

My local dealer uses TireRack. If you do not buy the tire from my dealer then mount and balance is $91.50.

The use of wheel sealant if you have the tire pressure monitoring system is interesting. For the 987 Porsche says you have to replace the sensor under the valve stem. Have to ask one of the mechanics if this is really true.

Have you considered that the towing guy may be making a good living by flattening Porsche tires?

I guess it must not be a 2007, even though its only a week old? The wheel/tire warranty pays for itself in one tire (~$600 / 4 years).

May as well unless you damage the rim.

Everyone recommends changing the tires after a flat, as the speed rating goes away with a fix.

Week old but used. 2005 S.

Warranty may not be a bad idea... Next set.
