20k/2 year service question
The "need service in x days" light is on. Local dealer says that the car needs it's 2 year service. It's an '05 997 with about 12k. They are going to charge about $600. What should I expect to get done? Thanks, in advance.

The indy quoted about $200. These guys used to work on my old BMW, so I know they are good. I'm concerned about the relationship with the dealer specially if something goes wrong with the car. They can't be overcharging by $400, can they? I'm willing to pay a bit extra for the same service at the dealer, but I don't know if $400 is "a bit."

I doubt that it says anywhere in the warrantee that you have to get it serviced at the dealer and pay extortion prices. (the extortion prices are paid up front to Porsche anyway).
Just keep your reciepts and documentation of the service done in case the issue comes up because the service won't be reflected in the dealer's computer records in case of a warrantee claim.

Can we just say give me an overpriced oil change, change the charcoal filter, and we will call it a 2 year service?
I ask because with BMW there is a big $ difference between and oil change and an oil service. The 'service' is the oil change plus they look at your door hinges and other worthless stuff.

Porsche North Scottsdale just quoted me $345. They said it would be an oil change and brake flush. For that I'll just take it to the dealer. I have an 05 non S with 8500 miles and the computer says 10 days until next service.

the y will chec and top off all your fluids
check for leaks ect
clean and lube latches locks and hinges and seals
change the air filter and the pollen filter
change the oil and the filter
check the fault memory
set the tire pressure
its not "just an oil change" there is more to it
200$ is a good deal if they are chnagin all your filters and the oil
you can get the car serviced anywhere but keep your recipts in the event of a failure porsche is gonna want to see them

Interesting thread. My 05 gave me that "need service" msg 1 month after i got my CPO car in May with 8K miles on it. I did the oil change my self b/c it's fairly easy an i wanted to see how dirty it was. And i had the dealer do the cabin filter (You can do that your yourself too...found that out on rennlist later but the dealer charged $75). And they did the "hydrolic fliud change" clutch and brake fluid for About $400 which is supposed to be a 2 year thing. Not a great deal over all but not THAT bad if thats the 2 year maintanence costs (besides tires of course)
I think the brake and clutch fluid can be DIY but if you dont know that you are doing i wouldnt mess with it. Just give to the dealer or a trusted indep. shop and just enjoy a highly tuned machine.

The indy was looking at a generic service list for Porsches. I called back with the service book list, and the charge went to ~$400. The dealers' $600 doesn't sound that bad now. My BMW service cost about that much, so I am not complaining about the price. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't paying $600 for an oil change. Besides, it gives me an opportunity to get the car looked over by the dealer in-case there are any issues. Thanks for the advice.

My 05 997S i just picked up has 4900 miles on it and the "service in 21 days" light came on just a few days ago. It will be a 2 year old car (from the original in-service date) this coming January.
Should I just get the oil change and brake flush in january? or should i get the full 20k service? or the full service+the brake flush?
also, can anyone recommend what service center in l.a. is the most reasonable?
thanks
