Default Avoid Potholes!!!!!!

Driving out on Long Island Monday night and hit a pothole on the exit ramp that was completely unavoidable. Knew as soon as I hit it that the result wasn't going to be good. Pulled over, checked all rims and tires, not good. Driver's front tire (Michelins) and rim (Carrera S Lobsters) bubbled and bent. Went to Legend Porsche and they replaced rim and tire and did allignment. $2100. Ouch!!!

Picked it back up today and drove home to Jersey and the car isn't driving well. Now there is a wierd creaking noise coming from what sounds like under the dash or steering column and the car felt very different on the road at speed.

Going back to Catena in the morning (bought there and have bought many other P cars there) to have them check it out. Sucks with a 2 month old C2S!!

$2,100 for a wheel, tire, and alignment? That's it? No reach-around?

Been there - once took out two wheels and tires at once on a nasty pothole, and not long after, another wheel and tire.

Your stealer ripped you off. Front tire should be $325 or so; alignment a couple hundred. Although there is a shipping time delay, next time call Wheel Enhancement (or similar) and buy a "used" (but perfect) wheel for a LOT less. (I'm guessing maybe $500 or so for the wheel.)

Sorry for your misfortune.

One good reason I opted for the 120,000 mile, 10 year extended warranty (to include at no deductible, the wheels and tires from road hazards).

OMG, $2100! Jim is right, that's about a $1000 worth of parts and labor. That's why I never have the dealer do anything outside warranty work. Today I got coupons from a local dealer for an oil change for $199. My local P garage does it for $80, same oil, same filter.

(my error, $127 with oil and filter change on my 997)

What's you shop's labor rate, $40/hr? $80 barely covers the cost of the oil and filter.

It's a local 2 man shop that specializes in Porsche, MB and BMW. This is what the man charges me, really!

(I stand corrected, it cost me $127 for oil and filter change today.)

The retail price for the oil and filter should be at least $80. Are you certain it's the same oil and filter?

Most if not all towns will reimburse you for such damage. You need to take a photo with the time / date stamp of the area (so anyone can tell where it is in town), a close up, shots of the damage, and a copy of the invoice. Here in CT a good friend had a pothole problem and got the whole $950 from the town. Towns / states have a responsibility to keep the roadways in good shape.

Agreed on Wheel Enhancement; not sure what they'd charge for a single Lobster fork (breaking up a set, and all...), but I've been quoted $1900 for a set of four take-offs (snow tires add'l). A dealer in the NW Chicago 'burbs quoted me a "special" deal of $3900 for the wheels alone, without TPMS...

The dealer aftermarket for OEM parts is just freaking ridiculous.
