What about Griot's Wheel Cleaner? Is this product alright to use on coated wheels or should i stay away from it?

Thanks to everyone for the excellent suggestion! I'll go shopping this weekend and see what I can find locally. FWIW, this is what I use as a wheel cleaner now: http://www.autopia-carcare.com/sontirwhl.html

Ahhh...I'd wondered, because I didn't think I'd driven anywhere to pick up tar and didn't have anything on the front of the car. Oddly, only 3/4 wheels had the subtance on them.
