I just got back from Sturgis and it is a much larger event than Daytona. Over 500,000 showed up this year. My hearing is now gone from all the loud pipes. I still had a ball and the Black Hills of South Dakota is some of the finest riding in the USA I have ever experienced. Daytona is a joke when it comes to riding.

On a side note, I really think this thread belongs in the OT forum. How it ended up here in the 997 forum is beyond the beyond??

I can see how having loud pipes can be a small bit of a safety feature, but why not just blip the throttle?

More than 1 Harley = a moving chicane. Pass them as quickly and safely as possible. No drama.

I have to laugh when I hear the Harley crowd discussing loud pipes as a safety issue. How about wearing gear - helmets, leathers, gloves, boots, and ear plugs. That would be a better choice for safety. How far in front of your bike is the sound cone at freeway speeds anyway?

Good point. Many states do not have helmet laws, and many riders therefore do not wear helmets. This is so important, and IMHO goes right along with major defensive driving while riding.

And how about all that lane splitting? Coming back from California the other day, I saw several rice rockets splitting lanes in somewhart stopped traffic, but ample room for vehicles to abruptly change lanes . Their speed.....a blur.

Talk about the next organ donors.

HA! I was headed south on the 101 going up the Conejo Grade from Ventura last week and one of those rice rockets was not only splitting the lanes, but really hauling tail. 80+ mph at least. To those familiar with this stretch of 101, it seems to bring out the "I've just got to show you how fast I can make it up this hill" in everyone. Anyway, just in to 1000 Oaks, a CHP car had him pulled over.

The cop truly did this guy a favor. Slow him down, make him think a little. You cannot indefinitely survive the roads with all the other cars around you while exemplifying those type of speeds and driving habits. He may be the most skillful rider in the world, but one is only as good as the weakest link...in this case the other drivers, which the rider has no control over.

Seems I heard or was told that while lane splitting is legal, any resulting accidents the motorcyclist is at fault? CHP motors do it all the time.

A bit OT, but related to CHP motors. Heading north on the 101 about a month ago, late at night. Noticed a nice older 'Vette entering near Westlake, I was doing about 80 and keeping to the right and I was getting passed by just about everybody. I came up a bit on the 'Vette just to look at it. He nailed it and probably got close to 100? Out of nowhere a CHP motor split the lanes and hit his lights. The 'Vette pulled over, I slowed and so did everybody else. But, the CHP just kept on going. Believe this is referred to the halo effect or something like that. Everybody will calm down for about 30 minutes after such an incident. Guess the CHP figured he couldn't nail everybody?

uzj the difference is that (presumably) the officer is going to a situation or needs to be available in case anything happens. Having said that, yes, they do do it just to get through traffic.
