Talking 997 vs CLK 55 AMK

I don't personally like street racing but this guy provoked me. Here's the scenario. I get to a traffic light next to the CLK. He looked @ me, I looked @ him. Big grin in our faces. Light changes, and the bastard in the CLK took off like a bat out of hell. I saw that, hit the gas and easily caught up with him by the time I shifted into 3rd, by the time I hit 5th I had @ least a car and half in front....I have to say, that mine car keep getting stronger and stronger...10k on the speedo. 911 is King

I've never seen a CLK 55 AMK before... is that faster than a CLK 55 AMG? You hit 10k on the speedo in 5th gear?!?! That is really fast!

AMK is a typo...I meant AMG, Had to stop before exiting into a highway ramp, by then, I was shifting into 5th like I said..probably 110+mph. Didn't look at the speedo.

the CLK AMG is not my kind of car, but I live near Mercedes headquarters so every Mercedes I see is an AMG.

A couple of months ago when I still had my Z06, a ClK AMG tried to race me. The Z06 was faster, no contest, but I was impressed with the acceration of the AMG. It was up a steep hill too.

Had a CLK 55. Fast car but it was no 997. Mercedes just crames a lot of horsepower in the AMG's. But that doesn't make them handle any better.

No surprise here. The CLK 55 has no Kompressor, weighs about 400-500 lbs. more than you do and if memory is correct has you by only about 15 HP or so. My least favorite of the AMG cars and handles much worse than the E, SL, or CLS

Stay away from the Kompressor cars though

Actually the much lighter weight CLK 55 is the better handling car vs. the SL CL and E 55's but as you state it has no kompressor and is much slower. Now the new normally aspirated CLK 63 with 480 hp and 389 lb ft of trq will be another beast for sure. The E55 (i own an 06) is very close to the 997S in 0-60/0-100 but once the 4200lb E55 get moving it's 469 hp power's through...

The SL's are just pigs, to me anyway. They just don't handle very well and if you get the $40,000 big engine there fast, but that's about all. There just a status car. With a Porsche you can really do something.

E63 AMG is a complete monster. Was not impressed with the handling at all but thats not its purpose I suppose. I have never been in a car that pushed you that back in the seat regardless of speed. Quite impressive. New two piece rotors up front are simply fantastic to look at never mind stomp on them hard. Love the new aggressive front clip vs. last years too.

have to (respectfully) strongly disagree with you here regarding the handling of the CLK vs. the other cars. Have you ever had the CLK on a race track? I've had them all at Lime Rock as well as Homestead and the CLK was terrible. The pro drivers said the same (Tommy Kendall, Jeff Andretti). The E is much better (not that that is great LOL) than the CLK. Just spoke to a friend who went to an AMG challenge which had the new CLK 63 and he said the same thing - even the new 63 CLK was worst on the track. "All over the track" is I think how he put it.

I agree. I owned a CLK 55 AMG coupe and it was a real floater. It floats and bobs all over the road. Absolutely horrible.

You have to be very heavy handed with any AMG car, even the SLK. You wrestle it around the track, its a total workout. Makes tire choice so much more important as they get the brunt of it. But I rarely see them in their workout clothes anyways...great autobahn cruiser though.
