Default Flat Position

Survey on WHERE the tire is that went flat on your car.

For countries where the driver is on the RIGHT SIDE of the car work with me and simply REVERSE where you are reporting the flat to be.

I suspect most of our flats will be on the right rear (American cars).

I had a flat on the rear right once on my 540i.
Didn't realize it coz' the sidewall was so stiff it looked normal.
Ripped the tire all the way round!

What is your theory about the right rear?

Probably reasoning that if you're parking near the curb, there's apt to be more potential "stuff" there that could cause a puncture and that there's more surface area to the rear tire?

The usual experience in the States is that when you are at a corner, you are running your tires closer to the gutter area, and the gutter area tends to collect a lot of nasty hazards. Of course, I'm trying to see if there really is a trend here.

The suggestion is to purposely avoid cutting the corner tight and go a bit wider than you're used to in order to hopefully avoid that trash. Construction areas are, of course, the worst,--roofing nails, screws, etc, do a job on these sticky tires.

I seem to get flats randomly at all corners.

Question to those of you who had flats on your 997: How noticeable was the flat? I'm asking because I had a flat on my previous car (350Z) on the interstate, but did not notice it until the tire started to smoke.

Front right. I also try to be as careful as possible with respect to cutting corners, shoulder of the road, etc.

That's precisely why the TPMS is critical with these pow profile cars. There is so little air in there to begin with, that any loss will result in more damage to the tire.

Yeah I know. Wish I had TPMS.

Before my little trip last weekend I checked air pressures and my left front was down to 24 psi and it was just starting to look a little low, that's why I checked. It turned out that all tires were low as I had to top them off with air before headin' out.

I walked up to the car and the LF was showing more wheelwell than usual...walked around to the right rear, and the tire was definitely low. I always carry a pressure gauge, and with 15-20 PSI I felt it was safe to drive slowly a few blocks to a gas station to fill it up in order to get me to a tire store, and the car definitely pulled to the right.

Both clues were subtle.

I try to keep the cars clean and with the tires Armor-All'd weekly, and I give a quick glance to the tire shoulders when approaching the car...in practice, it becomes obvious when the tires are needing air; the Armor-All is worn away closer to the edge.
