Default Remote control key going AWOL

I was at a friends house in La Jolla, CA for a nice dinner with wine....great time. As I was ready to go home, my remote would not open the car! I was freaking, maybe the battery died or those electrical gremins took over the car. I was able to open the car the old fashion way with the key and the alarm went off, but I was able to start the car and went home. At home the remote is back to normal. My friends house is up on a hill with alot of those repeaters for cell phones or communication, could this have block my remote? Has this happened to anyone else? Yes, I do have Smartop and it is the best mod., hopefully this was not the problem.

I find that my remote key is much more prone to outside interference (non function) than my Lexus.
In certain areas of MA, near radio towers, it repeatedly doesn't work, on the 997, but seems OK in the Lexus. Perhaps it's a frequency issue?
