Default Standard Phone module with PCM

Folks,

Can someone please help me understand what is the phone module which is "standard" with the PCM. Does it refer to the SIM card slot on the PCM and is it standard?.

Does it mean tha I can just insert the SIM card from my GSM cell phone into the slot in the PCM and use the PCM key pad for the phone function?.

Also is it really an option or standard ??

Thanks

There is no phone module that comes standard with PCM. The GSM phone module is an ordered option that works with a SIM card. If you did not order that option (Option Code 666) you don't have it. If you're buying (or bought) the car off the lot and the GSM Phone Module option does not appear on the option list, the car does not have it, though it's possible to retrofit one if you really want it.

Do a search using "phone" as your keyword for more information.

In the UK I've never seen a 997 without the SIM card slot or the buttons at the top for answering and finishing a call, so I guess these are standard, but we have to add the phone module (extra cost) to make these work! Then you slip your SIM card into the slot to get the full GSM functions. This works like a dream for me and all the info on the card (address book etc) downloads into the PCM.

No! The manual says "After pressing the SOS button an emergency call can be made if the PCM is equipped with a phone. If no phone is connected a message to this effect is shown in the bottom line after pressing the SOS button"

UK price was GBP523 in March when I took delivery of my car (USD700??) This is factory-fit which Porsche say is 'significantly' cheaper than after-market fit.

I called around and found that the cost of adding the 666 phone option to my 997 was going to be around $2300 including installation charges. That's way too much for a phone so I gave up on the idea.

The other day I was stuck in some bad traffic. So I decided to put my Cingular SIM card into the SIM slot to see what would happen. Well, to my surprise, I had a working car phone!!

Apparently the person that leased the car from the dealer had the phone installed at some point. It's not on the factory build sheet and the dealer I bought the car from did not know it was there.

Too funny....

Option 666 was a $960 factory option for 2006. Very good phone. A little pricy though.

Deven,

Yes, I know it was a $960 factory option. But try to find it for that price as a dealer installed option. You won't....and it will cost about $1700 for the option and about $600 to install.

I think ChipAZ just retrofitted the phone, so you could ask him about his experience/cost. It does not make sense that they would charge that much more for the phone module (the cost for the part should be less that the factory option price), but who knows? I know many people did the PSE retrofit, the parts were 25% less than the factory option price, but labor added to the final cost.

Deven,

It may not make sense, but that is the reality of the situation. I have already done the research. You don't believe it? Make some phone calls yourself instead of talking without any actual knowledge on the subject.

Anyway, my car has the phone so I don't need to worry about it anymore.
