Smoke upon start?
First Post
New 2006 C2 Red/Black
2600 miles.
Friday I started the car after it had been sitting approx. eight hours and a very large cloud of smoke came out of the exhaust. The car is just broken in and I have been following the break in procedure. The car does not smoke when driving nor upon subsequent start ups. Oil level and pressure appear normal. Should I be concerned? Possible causes?

He did have to pay for the original investigation and diagnoses (> $3000) for the engine teardown which I thought was nuts.

Yesterday when I picked up my 997 C2S they had it on the floor and had to mover 2 other 997's and 2 Caymans. I noticed that all 4 cars blew out a puff of white like smoke from the exhaust. mostly from the passagers side tips.

The older 911s did this routinely when they sat for some time,--oil collected. With the newer ones the oil separator could be the issue. With a site like the Rennlist it's a great way to find out if something is nothing or something to worry about!

I've had it happen with my BoxsterS and with my 997S. It seems to be common especially if the car sits awhile. No problems with the engines in either car. I think it is pretty normal.

The gaps in the piston rings rotate around as the engine runs(all cars do this). They will periodically be aligned near the bottom of the cylinder. A small amount of oil will collect in the head and be burned on startup, leading to a puff of white smoke.

It's OK for this to happen but only under certain circumstances. This is when I get it also with my MB's too: If the car has sat overnight and I start it back then it out of the garage to wash it and turn it right off, when I restart the car to move it back in to the garage this happens. It was explained to me that there is some unburned fuel and a bit oil that remained in the cylinders from the cold start and then quick turn off that gets burnt on the subsequent start up.
