Default Clear Bra: word of caution.....

In recent months, we have noticed more and more vehicles coming into our facility for redos. In all cases, these other companies are claiming to be proficient in custom installations, only to have us remove it and find cut marks everywhere. Here are two Lambos currently at our facility. One vehicle had been qouted a "custom" install and the other a precut. In both instances, razor marks were found underneath the film when we removed it.

We will not name names in this case, but cars are coming into our facility from all over country with the same problem. For those seeking "custom" installation, be sure to ask for references, check their work in person, and most importantly what is their policy about paint damage from razor blades. Even when companies claim no "cutting" will be performed on the car, we are still finding cuts on "precut applications".

We also had a silver CGT shipped to us approximately one month ago with extensive razor blade cuts right through the carbon fiber. This is a word of caution for those looking at purchasing protective film. Make sure you do your research and ask for plenty of references.

what can be done with the damaged cars?

for custom wraps, is the film cut out after applied usually? or does the installer cut it before film is completely tacked on?

Another way to avoid cuts is simply not to put a useless clear bra on it.

boolala, we don't agree on much but we do agree on this one

Hate the way the clear bra looks and these guys did it to protect the car. My opinion, the razor marks look worse than any stone chips might.

Thoroughly confused. I had planned on fitting a full kit (A pillar forward) to my soon to be delivered C2S. Most thought this an excellent idea, albeit a little pricey, but now I'm not so sure. I can see the appeal of naked paint but I also hate those stone chips and scuffs, but then I'd hate razor marks even more. There's always an excuse for a stone chip but never one for a razor cut. HEEEELP what should I do - perhaps I'll compromise and just have the front bumper covered and save some money too.

Default Kits

With Kits, you won't get the cuts on the paint. Without kits, they need to make all the cuts on the car.

I was about to give the dealer the go ahead for the clear bra install when my car gets in but after reading this post I'm just confused.

I too think the front bumper and mirrors and that's it. Any other ideas and help appreciated.

I already have it installed - dealer got it installed before delivery. Is there an easy way to check for razor marks without taking the bra off?

It certainly makes a case for that. All installers use the blades, especially for custom applications so there is an inherent risk of damage, no matter who it is. You'll only really know when the film is removed.

The key is the installer(s). This is not only a problem with custom installations, but also precut. As a matter of fact, we find just as much damage when precuts are installed vs. custom. The problem with this industry is that companies are attempting to make their installations look betteror to rectify an installation flaw with precut kits by using a blade when he is not trained or experienced to do this. There are certainly ways to trim and cut on the paint w/o damaging the customers' cars, which we have done consistently with the 1500 vehicles we protect each year. However, when companies try to do catch up to those performing good custom installations, their guinea pigs would be the customer's cars.

Not all custom installers will damage paint like this, but from what we are seeing, many would. This information is to help protect this community from such paint damage. The nature of "clear bras" are to protect our vehicle's paint finish. In these cases, it completely negates its usefulness.

OK, this more detailed information supports your claim more clearly.
