Why is the 911 the 3rd most expensive vehicle to own?

Egad - a Viper is "cheaper to keep" ? That doesn't seem right.

I agree, rear tire replacement every 10-15k miles. Small investment for a great smile... anyone know of a teeth whitening sale going on?

I really cannot believe a viper is LESS expensive to own the a Porsche. Besides, who drives a Viper as a daily driver? I'd be willing to bet a much MUCH smaller group then Porsche owners.

Like you said, I bet this is $/time and not $/mile. Because more 911's are DD's since the creation of the 996, I'm sure the average mi/year for the 911 has gone up as an overall brand.

Does the article say what they used to measure the cost of ownership? The 911 is an expensive car to buy but the gas milage is as good or better then my V6 Passat (kid transporter and winter car) and much better then my V8 Audi S4.

If you factor in the hit you take driving it off the showroom floor then that would explain it. Haven't read the article.

No exotics on there? Something is wrong. A Lambo anything is much more expensive in costs and depriciation.

Actually it wouldn't...another survey shows the 911 (and MB SL) in the top-ten for residual/re-sale value.

Plenty of more expensive cars take virtual nosedives when it comes to initial depreciation...Maserati comes to mind. And then there's my friend who's trying to sell a Maybach with less than 10k miles on it right now and looking to take a $100k bath.

I haven't read the article, either, but I imagine insurance costs are heavily weighted.

Depreciation % is pretty good but the depreciation $$ on a 911 because of the high initial cost is bad.

That list is total BS! I own a 2003 745i BMW and with the free BMW service for 3 years total ownership cost other than fuel has been $0.

Where's the Ferrari and Lambo among other expensive to maintain cars?
