You just need to add a little at a time, wait a minute then recheck the level. It should adjust to the oil you added and you can keep doing this until the desired level is reached.

because i poured some in - checked the gaueg - continued until the entire quart was added - at that time the gauge was still not at the top bar

I wait 1/2 hr or so between checks to allow oil to drain down. I have gotten different readings after 5 mins and 30.

it was 3/4 when I left the office yesterday and it's 4/4 this morning. How accurate is this thing anyway

It is stepped(digital) rather than continuous in it's readout so a change of as little as .2 qt can make it appear you have lost(or gained in the case of condensation) a "bar" of oil. Porsche could put a level in the Chrono to make it useful for those obsessive oil checking binges. I think the sensor is towards the rear of the block as it reads more w a slight uptilt of the nose. Anyone for a dipstick retrofit kit?

I would add only if it was in the lowest 3rd of the gauge. This way you have a bit of leeway before overfill (well I'm sure Porsche also built in more margin for the doofus owners).
That said, my car consumed 1/3 mark in 3000 miles. So you really don't have to worry that much.Just check while you are filling up and bring a quart with you.
