I have a rear tire that will not hold air....maybe a nail in it.
The dealer says to replace both rear tires which have only 2400 miles on them to maintain tread consistency.
I did a search but could not find anything on this........what are your thoughts ?
Wardo, let us know how things go. I posted sometime back asking if anyone ever tried filling a claim with their tire insurance and there was no one or no replies.
Yes I sure will.
I spoke to the tire insurance company and they said go to the dealer.
The dealer told me he knows the process and to bring the car in.....still waiting on the flat bed !!
Did you buy the tire insurance from the dealer or a third party? What is the name of the insurance? I'm looking to buy coverage but the two dealerships in San Diego does not sell them.
I've replaced one rear several times with more miles than you have - not a problem. If the tread was say more than half gone, I might consider replacing both, but not before.
I've used tire/wheel insurance and ther was a delay, but they made good.
As far as plugging a leak...depends on you and your philsophy.
I drive fast on occasion and don't need to be worrying about tire failure at triple digits. Secondly I would never forgive myself for hurting myself or anyone due to a bad tire. A few hundred bucks is CHEAP insurance in this department.

Since you bought out of state, are you having any trouble having the local dealer honor the insurance?
I haven't used a plug in a long while, but have patched numerous tires. It's more labor intensive, but the local truck tire repair does it for me. I've never had a problem with it. Occasionally, you learn that the sidewall is damaged (particularly if it goes flat on the highway), and need replacement at that point.
My own experience is that there is a greater risk of a new flat from an unrelated puncture than failure of the patch. Using all the lane on fast turns seems to be the cause, since most debris seems to accumulate at the edges. Nothing I've said applies to sidewall punctures, which I believe can't be repaired. I don't see a patch failure as likely, since cetrifugal force as a function of speed compresses the patch against the puncture, and can't expel it.
Since our low profile tires tend not to go thump-thump as they lose air, sensing the low tire is the challenge. Generally, to me, the symptom is side-to-side instability on small movements of the wheel.
If the flat hasn't de-beaded the tire, one or 2 cans of Fix-A-Flat generally allows me to drive the car to repair. If the tire has broken the bead, you need to jack it up to inflate it. With a slow leak noted at home, I don't understand why you just wouldnt inflate the tire, and drive it in. If the air is hissing out, I understand. But slow leak?...AS
